: Best factory cast iron intake for big block.
M.Maner Apr 28th, 05, 4:50 PM I have a 69 Chevelle bracket car now running 11.10s with a 454 with a Performer and a 750 mechanical Holley. I haven't done any tuning and I think I can get it into the high tens. But what I would really like to do is see if I could get a 10.99 out of it with a factory cast iron intake and a reworked Q-jet.I may not be able to do it,but I would like to try. So does anybody out there know which cast iron intake was the best performer from the factory? Thank's for any help.
Mike
Mike Feudo Apr 28th, 05, 6:53 PM Early 396 Q-Jet manifold. In my opinion it is better than a Performer just heavier.
GOSFAST Apr 28th, 05, 7:21 PM The best one out of GM ever was the one we have here (Holley). I believe it came on 360 HP BBC's in the 66's. I'm not sure of other years, but it's dated for 66 car. It's a factory "hi rise" and was cast up by Holley for high-end BB's at that time. It uses "square-bore" Holley carb and is OEM. We're hangin' on to this one but I do have access to another. It has "Holley" cast in it.
Thank's Gary.
pdq67 Apr 28th, 05, 7:26 PM Thanks Gary, b/c I thought that was the stock, hi-po cast-iron Holley pattern jobber but wasn't positive??

M.Maner Apr 28th, 05, 9:57 PM Thanks for the help guys.Gary that intake sounds interesting but I think I would rather try it with a Qjet. Thanks for the offer. Would any one have a casting # for the early 396 intake. Mike I sort of thought the Performer would be pretty close to a stock manifold, except for the weight which I remember being substantial. Again my thanks.

I've got the factory Q-Jet manifold on my '66 396 but for the life of me I can't remember what the casting number is off the top of my head.
If no one comes back with it before I get home this evening I'll take a peek and let you know.

L-71 Apr 29th, 05, 10:29 AM I've got one in my garage I'll need to check the # later on in the day.

rocks66ss Apr 30th, 05, 9:36 AM I have the original cast iron Holley on my 325hp 66. I have never thought of them as being special, as you can find them around here at the swap meets going anywhere from $50-100. I don't think I have been to a swap in the last 2-3 years and haven't seen one. It seem they show up at the swaps because the previous owners didn't like to deal with the exhaust cross over on the front of the intake. I have seen a lot of them with a bolt screwed in the ports on each side. The casting number on my intake is 3866948

Redmanf1 Apr 30th, 05, 11:40 AM cast iron intake casting # is 3883948 so it must be for a 1966 396 / 325 L35 Date code September (I) 17 1965. Q-Jet carb mount, I think this casting comes both ways.
M.Maner Apr 30th, 05, 12:19 PM Thanks for all the help guys,I definitively want to use a Qjet. Does anyone remember a 427 that would have come with a Qjet and cast iron intake? I have a friend who says he has this motor and has no need for the intake. I would like to find a factory cast iron manifold that would support a 454 up to around 5800rpm or so. Thanks for any help.

I have a factory high rise Q-jet cast iron intake, that came off a "67" 396. I don't know if it has "Holley" cast onto it, or the casting numbers. But if you are interested, I'll look at it when I get home.

Mike Can you tell us more about your current combo? You are saying that you have the regular Performer (non-RPM) on there, correct? That's pretty impressive.

L-71 Apr 30th, 05, 1:03 PM The manifold I have is casting number 3883948 for a QJet casting date 1276
ratuned Apr 30th, 05, 3:51 PM m.manor,
i also would love to know more about your combo. you seem too have a most impressive combo. it seems as if you must have a lot of converter and gear. thank you mike
M.Maner Apr 30th, 05, 4:30 PM Thanks everyone for all this information. Steve if you have a chance I would like the casting# off your intake,I was told there was a high rise intake available for early 396 motors with a Qjet. I assume all of these Holley cast iron intakes are for square bore carbs, is that correct?
Rod the only reason the numbers look pretty good on my Chevelle is because of it's weight or more accurately the lack of weight.I gutted the car after I decided to use it only as a bracket car.(Something I regret to this day!) The car with me in it only weighs 3200lbs. I have a 286/292 Engle cam,11:1 compression, small chamber, oval port heads with some porting and polishing I did, mostly just clean up in the bowls but I did polish the complete exhaust port.A regular Performer with the ports opened up to match heads,I did cut down the divider about a 1/2",a 750 w/ annular boosters a stub stack and a 4" cowl hood that I sealed to the air cleaner.Hooker 2" super comps ,MSD ignition w/rev limiter.Turbo 400 w/GER 3500rpm converter,4.10 spool in a 12 bolt w/28"x10.5" slicks. I have airbags and Southside Machine lift bars with Moroso trick springs up front. So the car has a bunch of low end torque and it 60fts good with a best of 1.47,but the lack of horsepower shows up down track with a best MPH of 118.2. I only have a half dozen passes on this 454, my 396 that was in the car was running 11.80 when a stress crack caused it to start leaking water. So I hope I can get in the high tens with this motor.Again thanks for the help guys.

jet_tech Apr 30th, 05, 7:48 PM If someone does have one of these manifolds ( 3966948 ) I'm looking for one for my 66 chevelle. Carb also (3874899) Date code of March, 1966 . THANKS !

Well I got home and checked the casting number on the intake.
Casting # 3883948
It also has GM 1 T cast just above the carb plate. I think the "T" stands for tall, but I'm not sure. If you would like I can e-mail you some pictures.
Steve
Edit: It look like it's the same one L-71 has.
ratuned May 1st, 05, 10:12 PM thanx for sharing the info. i'm wondering if the cam is the hydraulic or solid version? did you use the stock or larger valves? also what fuel do you use? thanx again. mike
M.Maner May 1st, 05, 10:59 PM ratuned,it is the solid cam,the valves are stock size,I mixed 114 with premium at two gallons premium to a gallon of 114. It also has 3 1/2" by 10" collectors. I really enjoy the car but it isn't the best bracket car, with the low end torque it has it's hard to get a repeatable 60ft.,and if you can't do that you won't win many race's ,but it is a lot of fun! I just e-mailed you those pictures. Let me know if you have any problems opening them up.
Steve
ratuned May 1st, 05, 11:23 PM i hear you, my thoughts are that combo in a early camaro or nova would make a solid 10 second piece that would be more consistant. i bet you could pull a little timing out and run pump gas. btw do you know the head casting #? i've had good luck running higher compression with pump gas on closed chamber big blocks. mike
