I have an assembled 383 that I'm having a heck of a time getting fired up. I have spark, fuel, I've checked the plug wires/firing order and have checked the distributor placement a dozen times. I'm going to check the valve lash next, but I can't remember if this motor was built with solid or hydr lifters. This motor is new, but two years old. I had it built two years ago, but due to deployments, this project has been slow going. I've been doing a lot of searching on here to try and figure out what my deal is with this motor. So that is where I'm at, checking the valve lash. Is there a way to see what kind of lifters I have when the motor is assembled? I pulled the valve covers and I can shine the flash light down into the heads and see the top of them. Anyway of identifying them this way? If anyone is interested in hearing the whole story with this motor and the problems I've dealt with, to try an help me troubleshoot, let me know. This motor did run at one point, and the cam is broken in. Heck I even drove the car for a short distance. But after swapping parts that probably should not of been on this motor to begin with, I can't get it to fire. Anyway, thanks for any assistance.

if all the rockers are loose when the valves are closed, loose about the same amount it's probably a solid cam setup. If you can push down on the pushrod end of the rocker and get some movement (valve closed), it's hydraulic.

Awesome, thanks Tom. I'll go back in the garage and see what I have and then set the lash from there.
