: Radial slick update...

A couple of weeks ago I posted a topic asking for the pros and cons of radial slicks.
Soon after, I ordered a set of Hoosier 30-10R/15 slicks in C06 compound. Actually fit under the Chevelle with only a slight massaging of the upper wheel lip.
Due to a fuel delivery issue, the previous outing was inconclusive on the radials.
BUT...Last Saturday, a group of TC'ers got together at a local 1/8 track.
All I've got to say about the radial slicks is HELL YES they work!!
At least in my application...

Best incrementals of the night:

60 ft. 1.45
1/8 ET 6.64
1/8 mph 105.83 !!

Worked so good in fact, I cooked the 800 lb spring, carbon fiber Eaton posi. :(
As an added bonus, with 19 lbs of air, the car is VERY stable at speed.

And on that track, it BETTER be stable at speed! :)

Bill,

Nice runs on Saturday! I for one am glad to see your car performing up to its potential. With a little more tuning and suspension work you might see a 9.9x pass in good air :) Gotta love those cubes...

That`s impressive.
Did you have any pass`s where you might have spun a little?
Just wondering if they recover or do you have to lift for a split second like drag radials.
What`s your guess for 1/4 mile?

Although I didn't have my car out, it was nice to meet Ken,Mike, and Dana B.

Awesome Bill....I may have to try those..I was kind of waiting for your results.

Heck that spanks my 1/4 mile ET

Nice times. I got a set of those radial slicks (goodyear but I think a harder compound) and am really wanting to try them out once I get the car back. Seeing your times wants me to try it now. Probably blow the rear though, but the more things that break, the more power you have right?

Congrats on the great times,
Chris

Bill........do you think precision ignition timing and larger venturi in that carb will make that thing haul butt?.....just me .....and I dont know nothin' from nothin' but.....I have a vision of one day that thing runnin' a combination like this.........1.45 60'.....6.45@107/10.19@131........and then there's always valve lash,jetting........BTW, I love white race cars!

Just a warning, but the Lightweight C06 compound radials will wear out fast, 40 passes is there limit on a heavy car.
The heavier C07 compound radial will go 75-80 passes.

They're fast tires though!!!

Best slicks I've tried yet, 60fts are within .02-.03, last weekend 1.51-1.52, they just flat hook and very stable. I guess thats what I have to look forward to now Bill, mine only has 400lb springs, 4.11's and a spool are on their way. Congrats on the new bests

I am headed to the track Friday night with my new tires. I just got a set of 15 x10's rallyes and 275/50-15 Mickey Thompson ET street Radials. I am going from a 28" slick to a 26" radial. The tall tire was killing my first gear with the lead sled. I was tearing to much stuff up trying to leaving hard. I can't wait to see how they do. I should also be crossing at 6800rpm from 6300.

I am running those radial hoosiers as well...after figuring out the best burnout for my application I got mine to run 3 consecutive runs in the 1/4 on sunday:
10.375
10.377
10.377

I currently have 47 passes on mine, and have durometer readings of 45 on them. They started out at 40....once they get close to 50 on the durometer I am replacing them. (probably another 15-20 passes.)

Only problem that I found with the radial hoosiers is that if the track isn't great, and you are putting power to them, they will spin and will continue to spin. Saturday I had these passes:
10.35
10.37
10.51 (first round...spun)..lose .14 worth when they spun

Good point, they are marginal on a cold or poorly prepped track, other than that, they are deadly and a little expensive  but thats what its all about, takes money to go fast, consistently :D

How do you plan to gain .2 in 660' with no improvement in 60'? If you figure out how to do that (without spraying or switching to a glide and adding another ~50hp) let me know :D

Because he only had 30 degress total timing on all of his runs.....I know because I checked...........even on his 6.64.............the mph came up over one mph after pulling up the timing to 35 but the timing is not stable from deflection or? and right after that he roasted the posi so we dont know ,but I suspect the e.t. will pick up a bunch and i'm really bustin' his chops about gettin' a crank trigger ........stay tuned because as they say he's still tuning

No doubt there is more tuning to be done, however you will NEVER pick up .2 ET in 660' in a 3,700lbs car without a sizeable amount of the ET gain happening in the first 60' (unless you're spraying or something else like I previously mentioned).

Wow!! stories like this with give me hope to get mine to hook. Our track is terrible. the prep is near non existant. That being said you guys said radials don't work on slick tracks, why?? Bill, what is your suspension set up again???

Thanks for all the encouragement, guys!
I'm really pleased with the car's performance, so far.
I'm not out to make this a full time drag car.
With only a tire swap, I truely enjoy doing double duty in it...occasional trips down the strip and thumping around on cruise nights or just around town.
My rear suspension consists of tubular upper & lower control arms, Edelbrock no hops, Moroso trick springs, HRParts anti roll bar, & QA1 adjustable shocks.
Front is Global tubular control arms, 2nd gen Camaro spindles, & QA1 "R" series coilovers/shocks.

OK........anything in the 6.40s is great right?...........geeez I wish I had a Chevelle! My feeling is its going to be quite a feat to get 3700lbs to 60' better than mid to low 1.40's but I think he's got the power in there to get the car to E.T. a good bit quicker, even without big changes to the 60ft.
