: selection of tires
Aaron Apr 25th, 05, 7:40 AM Well, I have been looking for some new tires for my chevelle. I have been looking for something a little stickier than the BFG T/A. I have not found anything out there for a 15 inch wheel. There seems to be a little more selection for the 16 and 17 inch wheels, but thats not what I'm using. Seems like the only choices for the 15's are the BFG, Cooper, Dunlop, and Goodyear. They all seemed to have the same compound. I want something sticky without having to go to a drag radial. Anyone have any ideas or suggustions?

Xtreme70SS396 Apr 25th, 05, 11:56 AM You know, it seems almost sacrilegious to put japanese tires on a Chevelle.....
GRN69CHV Apr 25th, 05, 11:58 AM I had Yokohama Avid S/T's on the '68 Stang. Other than getting used to seeing a Japanese name on the sidewall, they were actually pretty good tires. I will agree though, for most of us that barely drive our cars more than 2000 - 3000 miles per year, what's the difference if the tire has a softer compound and only last 10,000 - 15,000 miles.

ARe you saying that we should just run the drag radial anyway? I probably run 7,000 miles in a year. Maybe two trips to the track. Drag radial such last that long.
Aaron Apr 25th, 05, 12:13 PM When checking tires what is the rate of wear for a good sticky tire. 200 to 300, 300 to 400? BFG's are rated at 400. Those are definately not sticky.
TripleWhiteSS454 Apr 25th, 05, 12:47 PM You don't have to go Japanese, or even depart from BF Goodrich for that matter, to get good traction. Personally, I'm a die hard fan of BFG and Bridgestone. Check out the BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW (http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/assets/pdf/gforce_ta_kdw.pdf). I used to run these on my rice burner before I sold it and now use them on my '69 'Stang. The tire ratings are: Treadwear 300, Traction AA, and Temperature A. Only difficulty may be the size you're looking for. Good luck.
Aaron Apr 25th, 05, 4:10 PM Look like good tires, but no selection for 15s. There are a two I believe, but they are small tires. Difficult situtation.
thunderstruck507 Apr 25th, 05, 6:18 PM my BFGs are notably stickier cold than my old tires that were made by Kelly I believe.
Also have better wet traction and seem to be wearing slower. What size are you running? could always go wider
Aaron Apr 25th, 05, 7:39 PM I have 235 60 BFG right now. I planning on moving to 275 60. Not sure how much difference that will make with just the BFGs. Also the current BFG are 8 years old, but have not been run over 5000 miles. Been in storage and well taken care of.
TripleWhiteSS454 Apr 26th, 05, 8:18 AM Even stored indoors, tires that are 8 years old would break down. To what extent, I don't know. And it sounds like you never really got a chance to break them in, in the first place. :D You can always try some of today's BFG radial T/A's -- BFG could have made some serious advancements in the past 8 years to improve the radial T/A's traction. :)
Anyway, given the size you're looking for, try looking at the Firestone FireHawk Indy 500 which is available in 275/60 R15. Like I said earlier, I'm a big fan of Bridgestone as well, and Bridgestone/Firestone are one in the same. Also, the FireHawk Indy 500 got some very good grades ...

69boo307 Apr 26th, 05, 8:27 AM Regardless of the brand, the thing to look at is the treadwear rating. A high number (300-400) means a rock-hard tire that will probably last forever but will have no stick whatsoever.
Look for a tire with 150-200 treadwear rating. Still will last a decent amount of time, but will have a softer compound and a good bit more stick.
Aaron Apr 26th, 05, 5:12 PM Problem I see is that for 15 inch wheels there are no alternatives for sticky tires except drag radials. Yohohama make one that I believe is a little below 400, but this is the only one. Anyone have any other information.
