normie Apr 26th, 01, 6:32 AM after mixing and shooting it should be more than enough to do the entire car. considering 2 quarts are usually enough to paint a car.. Not much more surface area on and el camino..
Of course I'm no professional.
Jimmy P Apr 26th, 01, 8:52 AM Just exactly what kind of paint is it? Any type of pearl paint needs to have a clear coat.
normie Apr 26th, 01, 9:42 AM Don't forget you CAN NOT color sand Pearl.. Get 2-3 coats of clear or you will disturb the media orientation and make the job look like POO..
72sselcamino Apr 26th, 01, 10:23 AM Have any of you guys actualy seen pearl white. Does it look good. I'll have to do a little recearch to find out what kind of paint it is. Like I said it came with the car. Thanks

normie Apr 26th, 01, 12:21 PM depends on the pearl color and make of the paint.. One thing you should note. Pearl Paint is not easy to repair, don't think you can do a section that was scratched and be done with it.. Most people wouldn't recommend something pearl/candy for a daily driver. for some pictures of cars that are pearl try www.houseofkolorcanada.com (http://www.houseofkolorcanada.com) the regular HOK site doesn't have many photos.. Good luck
red2rider Apr 26th, 01, 6:17 PM If all you have is 1 gallon of paint I think your in for some hassle. I've never seen a pearl with out a base coat beneath. Most true pearl whites require a white basecoat with the pearl over that and then a clear to top it off. These are called tri-coat systems. Pearls are a little trickier to apply than most other metallics. You need to apply it evenly. If the pearl developes the slightest sag while putting on it will show. When applying pearls I take my last 2 coats around the car in a fogging pattern to help the pearl develope a dimension affect. Plus it also helps it to look even for any imperfections with the distance on the gun applying it. This is a good safety factor to keep you out of trouble. If the paint ever has to be touched up later it will be a B$%^& to get it to match. Would I paint a 67 elcamino pearl white. I think so, but ya bet I wouldn't drive it everyday. If your not a painter get ready to shell out some bucks to get it done right. And may the gravel and bug gods show mercy on you when going down the road. 72sselcamino Apr 26th, 01, 10:52 PM The paint PBG (I Think) something like that. I had considered giving it a Earl Shives paint job my self.Just to keep it from rusting.I have never painted a car before.I guess it would be better to leave it to the pro's.If you guys could, take a look at this car. It's old body work that needs finished. The guy just primered it.It's now starting to rust.My kid can't really afford to get it painted right now.But he needs to start driving the car now to work if he ever gets a job. What would you recemend we do for now. Could we put something on it, or just let it rust. Thanks.
His is the 67.

normie Apr 27th, 01, 7:39 AM Don't let it just rust! Get rid of that rust, and at least put a better primer on it.. Epoxy or the primer sealer stuff the guys here use.. Would you rather remove paint and panels when you get the money or just remove paint and have good solid body when you have the money to do it??
wes migletz Apr 27th, 01, 1:22 PM I had my car painted 2000 VW Cybermist Green. I used a urethane primer (tan), a sea green sealer, and then had the shop shoot the color, which has the pearl blended in. The shop then shot a couple coats of clear and wet sanded.
Some early 90's Cadillacs were pearl white. Never cared for the color myself, but it's just my preference.

PS Glad to see you're keeping the car
Jimmy P Apr 27th, 01, 8:08 PM This may be what you don't want to hear, but, you just can't paint over rusting primer. You're going to have to address that rust before you even think about putting paint over it. If you've never painted a car before, don't worry. If you want to treat the rust and prep the car the right way, we'll help you. If you have a compressor, a paint gun and the desire, you can prep the car the right way and then paint it the right way. WE ARE HERE TO HELP YOU!
