I have small bubbles in my clearcoat. My body man said he could get them out with a wet sanding block or color sand them out. Can I do this myself?

Yep - depending on the depth you need to go, use 1500 or 2000 wet sanding paper and a small flexible sanding block. Use plenty of water and sand in one direction. The issue with bubbles (if I understand correctly what you're describing) is that some of the clear has little divits in it. Depending on how many coats of clear are on there, you may have to sand very close to the base - so be careful not to cut into the base coat.

Many painters perform the 2 + 2 method with clear. After applying the base, apply 2 coats of the clear. Let setup and wet sand, I think they used 600 or so for the wetsanding here. Clear and prep the surface again then shootthe final 2 coats. This eliminates many issues such as orange peal and gets the clear very flat and almost ready to be buffed and polished.

I performed this method on some CA Black Plate license plates I was restoring for my sons's car - the clear on them came out very nice and flat and shiny.

Thank you guys...the paint is old and has a lot of clear on it but I will be very careful or maybe just pay to have it done.

Hmmmm has a LOT of clear on it??? 5 coats should be the max from what I've heard with today's clears - not sure if there is consensus on this though. I probably read the max # of coats on http://www.autobody101.com. Like I stated the 2 + 2 method seems to be talked about the most on that site and have experimented with it myself. It works....

Thanks JJ. The car was painted in 1986 and although it still looks great, I was told it had 10 (yes 10) coats of clear. Whoever painted it did a beautiful job and I want to keep the color. Maybe 10 was the norm back then.
