: LS5 vs LS6 tach

I'm fairly certain the tach redline on the LS6 was 6500 (true/false?) but what about the LS5? Reason I asked, aside from the fact I don't know, is a gentleman sent me some pictures of a 70 needing restoring and was wondering if it was originally a LS6 car - not that it matters much since the engine is gone - but the car does have a 6500 redline tach. Says it comes with a new crate motor (size not specified) as is looking for a value of it. Anyone interested I have larger copies of the photos (1mb each) and the guys email address. Body tag is nothing special but it is a Van Nuys car w/January 3rd week date.

all solid lifter cars LS6, L78 for 70 had 6500 red line RPM Tachometers, all the other BB cars L34 and LS5 had 5500 red lines,, there were some other versions but they were small block Tach's, the dash in the pictures looks very fresh compared to the rest of the car, hard to say what that car was born, they now make everything dash wise reproduction, so SS conversions are fairly simple now, although the dash housing looks like a real one because of the washer-wiper script on the repro its almost flush with the dash this looks pretty correct,, the gauges are either new repro or a restored cluster,, hard to see from the pic, with out all the details and lists of parts it would be almost impossible to try and guess a value as it sets, Good Luck

Be interesting to know what the particulars of the Transmission & Rearend are too.
Suffix code,Part number and Casting dates etc..

In regards to the dash housing, the repo's that I have seen have silver trim around the turn signal/high beam holes, originals did not have these.the wiper script looks funny to me too.... The fan shroud on the engine is also not correct. I'd like to look at it more closely.

Dale;

My LS5 (real original) has a 5500 RPM redline tachometer.

Check on top of the gas tank for a build sheet. Just about every Van Nuys car I've ever seen has one up there. Both of my 70 cars are Van Nuys cars and both still have build sheets there (as well as others that were found inside the car).

Most of the 1970 SS454 LS5 Chevelles have the 5500 redline tach as discussed above, but not all. If your car had the 5500 redline tach, then you would have the 985 code in box 72 of your build sheet. However, some documented LS5 cars did come with the 5000 rpm redline tach and have code 938 instead. My LS5 is documented with a buildsheet and does have the 5000 rpm redline tach which matches the buildsheet and Dave Birdwell mentioned the exact same thing in a previous post on this topic. LS6's had 6500 rpm redline tachs, of course.

That looks like a repro dash with new gauges. Original dashes had the large rings outlined in chrome. The gauges also looke white as opposed to having a green tint to them specific to 1970. The only other thing I am noticing about the dash housing is that the lettering for the wipers and lighter are highlighted in silver. The repro dashes are not like that, they are black.

I see amber lenses in the front bumper on the ground and vertical grill trim above & below the SS on the grill, what does that tell you? Clone?

Pretty good chance. Don't get ripped off, this is the best place to get the info on chevelles. IMO.

I would bet money this is a repro dash (condition compared to the rest of the car and the silver trim around the inner circles) ... also it looks like the letters are white to me instead of the green. Its extremely easy tody to put a new guage cluster and dash in.

Have you checked out the rear? 12-bolt? Gears? Codes?

My guess with what you are showing is that is it most likely a clone, but the build sheet tells all.

Way too many people think they are buying the "real-deal" and end up getting a clone. My friend paid 30K for his 70 and we now think it is a clone. (told him he should of checked it out more carefully).
