I would like to find out what kind of fluid to use in my 66 convertible hydraulic pump. I got three different answers. The convertible top parts place said to use ATF, thay say all the parts last longer. The GM dealer said use a high pressure hydraulic fluid that is used for hyd. clutchs, this is not brake fluid they say. The body manual calls for GM Hydraulic Brake Fluid Super #11 or equivalnt. I would like to use ATF, it is so hard on paint.
Thanks
Bob

This has come up before. I had the same question. I think most people here change to ATF. My original pump, which was fried, used brake fluid. The used one I bought had ATF in it, so that's what I used. I probably should take mine and drain it out as I'm sure there still was some old brake fluid in the cylinders. I'm still getting used to having a working power top again, so I don't want to take it apart again! I'm not sure how you would get it all out anyway. And talk about a pain to fill the pump...

I'm under the opinion that ATF is perferred. If it leaks, it won't kill your paint.
