We've got a 1971 396/402 with the long-style water pump. The engine has the 3-groove pulley on it (the inner two grooves are the same size and the outer one is bigger). I took the water pump pulley off of the pump on our old 327 thinking that it would work on the 396. However, the two pulleys (the largest groove from the crank pulley and the water pump pulley) just BARELY touch each other when installed!
Does anyone have the diameters handy for their crank and water pump pulleys so that I can compare them to ours?
Any other ideas? Should this pulley from the 327 work? or do I need to buy a replacement? Year One wants like $66 for the water pump pulley! :clonk:
Thanks!

Anyone have this? Sorry to be a bother, but I believe this is the last part I need to get figured out so that I can finish the 327-to-396/402 swap. I've got pulleys hitting each other and I'm not sure what part is "wrong."
I took some pics of the pulley that I took off my 327 and tried to use on this. The number on it appears to be 383x402DU (where x is not stamped well at all -- maybe a 3 or 8 or 9 -- something curved at the top). I can barely read some of the others too though, so even what I think it is may not be accurate really.
The diameter is almost exactly 7". It has a single groove. Here are the pics:

If someone could tell me the diameter of their proper water pulley from a 396/402 with a long water pump, I'd really appreciate it. A part number would also be handy. And any thoughts on if you think mine is incorrect or not (I'm actually hoping it is -- since that would explain the clearance problem).
Thanks!

P.S. I just need a single-groove pulley, right?

Ok -- did a bunch of searching and finally came up with the ACTUAL number of this pulley that I have -- it must be 3932402DU. According to a nice PDF chart (intended for Camaro info) that someone here linked to in an older post that I found, it is 7.15" diameter and was used on 1969 Camaros, at least.
Doing other searching, I find that I believe the proper pulley should be either 6-1/4" or 6-7/8" maybe? Still looking for the proper number and diameter -- but wanted to share what I found about the pulley I have, at least.

FWIW, I just looked at my 69 with A/C
The single grove pulley on the water pump appears to be aproximately 6" dia with the number 393243DW stamped on it.
The single groove lower pulley (the front one with the water pump belt on it) appears to be aproximately 7 1/2" dia.
The two grove pulley behind it looks to be about 6 1/2" dia.
(Hard to get exact measurements with everything in the way)
I can not get my index finger in between the upper and lower pulleys so they must be within 1/4" of touching each other.

Sounds good -- thanks. According to my chart, that is a 6.2" Water Pump for a 69 with A/C. That should work for me, I think. I'll use that as one of my search numbers. (Just to note in in case someone else comes across this thread later looking for a part number, I believe you must actually be "3932430DW" (note the 0 in there).

Ok -- thanks again for the info -- this will indeed help me out!
