: New guy with a 502
Bruduce66 Apr 18th, 05, 1:28 PM Hello, I just bought a 502 gen v block, dimple rods, merlin 269cc large oval port 119cc open chamber heads 2.19 in 1.88 ex. steel crank . I bought it disasembled It only had 4 hour's on it it came out of a off shore boat every thing lookes cherry I am going to send it in to be checked out. It is going in a "66" chevelle 3400lbs empty 3590lbs with me in it. 400 trans 4.56 12 bolt rear (I will change gear ratio ) 29"" rear tires. My question is I want a soild Roller in the motor and not have to spin it much more than 6000rpm's and would like a wicked idle. no power brakes so vacume ain't much of a concern.it is going to be a street/strip car it is my toy.the cam will help dictate what stall and rear gear ratio to run. any help would be great.
thank you in advance.
Bruduce66 Apr 18th, 05, 2:13 PM I forgot to add no more than 10.0 to1 on the comp. and pump Gas. thank you.
GRN69CHV Apr 18th, 05, 3:27 PM Bruce,
If that 502 shortblock is stock, with the Merlin heads the motor has about 8.7/1 CR and that's if the Merlins are indeed 119CC. I think a lot of them tend to be a few CC's bigger.
Bruduce66 Apr 18th, 05, 5:21 PM that would make complete since, because the motor had a huffer on it, I will be buying JE's for slugs, Do you have any thoughts on the cam. thankyou for your reply.
UDHarold Apr 18th, 05, 6:17 PM If you can get your CR up to at least 10:1, preferrably 10.5:1, you will like the Lunati 502A5LUN. It has been a torque-monster for 25 years, although it will pull a little higher than 6000.
Its' specs are: 286/296 at .020, 255/263 at .050, .685"/.680" gross valve lift, and 107° LSA. I generally put them in about 101° ATDC, give or take a degree. Since it will be making quite a bit over 600 BHP, you'll need a really good fuel system, preferrably a 250-gph electric pump and all 1/2" #8 fuel line from tank to carb.
I have had some 2500-lb Camaros run 9.10s with this cam, no NO2.
Run a 4.10 rear, and anything from a 3500 SS to a 5000 SS, depending on how streetable it is supposed to be, and how fast in the 1/4 you want it.
I've probably made well over a 1000 of these BBC cams. It was one of my 2 most popular.....

GRN69CHV Apr 18th, 05, 6:27 PM 101 Icl?
Bruduce66 Apr 18th, 05, 6:54 PM thank you very much for the reply, will I be able to run 10.5 to1 comp with iron heads and pump gas?
GRN69CHV Apr 18th, 05, 8:18 PM Tell you what, I really do not understand this 500CI stuff. The cam duration numbers that get tossed out there just seem really big. Makes the 233/236 hyd roller I have look like an econo cam.
UDHarold Apr 18th, 05, 9:05 PM GRN69CHV,
BRUDUCE66 said he wanted a solid cam. The 286/296 will run at 10:1, it just makes more power with a little more. I used to run them in some offshore 598s, and they had peak power about 5200..... I don't think the CR was too high, either.
If BRUDUCE66 is happy with a hydraulic roller, I could make him a 288/296HR on 108 or 110, with 236/244 at .050, .600"/.600" gross valve lift. I have posted before on Team Chevelle that this cam delievers 630 BHP at 5400 in a 9.2:1 540, on 87-octane. The LSA was 114, but I think it would idle nicer than he wants.
I also have as 292/302HR, with 240/250 at .050, and still .600/.600 gross valve lift. Both these cams have excellent street life.
I have not compared the idle of these older cams of mine with the new VooDoo line.
We have both .600" and .625" valve lift hydraulic rollers for the BBC.

GRN69CHV Apr 18th, 05, 9:48 PM Harold,
I'm not questioning anything. I am just amazed at how these 500CI motors swallow camshaft. The last time I fooled with anything with true power was 20+ years ago, and I don't have to tell you, things were a little different then. I am hoping you check back in here. I saw you had indicated the solid roller installed at 101ICL, is that becasue of the asymetrical lobe or do you just run it well advanced to keep velocities up?
UDHarold Apr 18th, 05, 10:13 PM GRN69CHV,
I've run it at 101° ATDC ICL for 25 years because that's where it seems to make the best power. It has a very good power band from about 3000 to 7200 in 468s at that setting. That is also the same place we ran it in those 598s. As the engines get bigger, the peak power RPM comes down, but the mid-range remains. That is one strong pulling cam!
