I recently purchased a 1971 El Camino. The front clip is pretty rough, And I Like the 1969 front clip more than the 71. If I change the whole clip including the core support will it fit the frame, And match the cowl and doors? Thanks for the advice.

I'm pretty sure it won't work, it's a total different design, but you could change it to a 70' front clip or a 72'.

BlueDog69th,

Mac70 is correct the design is different so the back of the fenders will not match the contour of the 71 doors. The El camino's fenders are also a little different then the Chevelles although I am not sure about the 68-69's they are 70-72.
But anything is possible if you really want to go they way I guess. I am sure someone has tried/done what you are thinking and will let you know here.
Good Luck! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm still working on it, but I should have the body pretty well roughed out next week. I started by installing a 65 GTO dash and interior, I tried to do it as a 65 at first but none of the body lines matched up. I got a free 67 Tempest parts car about a month ago and the parts will work, I already have the front clip and doors on. The top body line on the doors match up with the El Camino quarters but the bottom body line does not, I have to cut a section out of the Tempest quarter in front of the rear wheels and splice it into the El Camino quarter so it still has the coke bottle look. The contours of the El Camino quarters are the same as the Tempest door. I have to move the door striker also because it needs to be about 1/2 inch lower than it will adjust. I already have a GTO hood and nos 67 grills. The engine will be a 69 Ram Air 3 with a 66 tri power and a 4 speed trans.

Unlike the 70-72 years, in 69 on all coupes, 4 doors, convertibles, station wagons and El Caminos, the fenders are the same
I'm pretty sure all 68-70 core supports are the same too so it seems to me all you need is a pair of 69 doors, fenders, hood, grill and trim

some of you say it will work if i change the doors also, But the scrap yard says the doors are the same from 68-72. my main question i guess is did the frame and cowl change at all, And will i have to change the core support?

It should work.

If you are putting the core support and everything from the 69 on the 71 frame I would think it would work. The 69 core support has the four headlight holes were the 71 only has two.
Just make sure you double check the 71 door contour to make sure it's the same as the 69 fender and the 69 fenders are the same length as the 71s. Not sure if they are different or not just thought it might be a good idea.

As long as you change the whole front clip you should be find. The whole reason the elcamino and wagon has diferent fenders 70-72 is because they didn't change the body from the 69 style in Elcaminos. The doors are even the same 68-72 with the exception of vent windows starting in 69. I think the guys above didn't notice you were dealing w/ a Elcamino. Good luck
