I am taking my fiberglass hood tomorrow to trade for a nearly new original cowl hood. The guy needed a fiberglass hood to cut up for his blown motor and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time. Will my Malibu springs and hinges be ok for the cowl hood or did the cowl hoods have beefier hinges/springs?

you will need weaker springs.

Why don't you swap the springs with the guy while you are at it. I don't know if the springs were different, but I do know that you usually go to weaker springs with the glass hood. So if you were to give him the springs that has been working with the glass hood and you take the ones that have been working with the cowl hood, that just makes sense to me.

By the way I have a trick for you to remove the springs. Use a chain about two feet or longer that has has a hook on the end, a flat hook. You hook the hook on the spring hook with the hood down a little so you can get a straight shot at it. You may need to wrap the chain around your wrist. Pull on the chain and it will come right off.

Are the hinges the same for the Malibus and the Chevelle SS's?

The hinges are the same for 70-72 chevelle it doesnt matter if its malibu or cowl induction hood. The springs are what is different, the cowl springs are just a bit stiffer then the regular springs. You can still buy springs from your local GM dealer

Will my regular springs work still? I just picked the hood up today. Not a dent in it.

I used the stock springs from my 1972 Elky (which originally had a flat hood) on junkyard special SS hood without a problem. My hood springs seem pretty stiff, I wouldn't want much stiffer. Now, I've heard of guys with weak springs or worn out hinges haveing problems, but their hinges/springs needed replaced anyways.
