Im trying to figure out how to route it. It first plugs into the dash harness next to the brake light switch, but on the other end it has a rubber grommet style plug that should go into a sheetmetal hole. I cant find the hole anywhere. I see the hole for the clutch rod and speedo cable but thats it. The harness also is only about 2 feet long. This is a factory 4sp. elcamino.

The rubber grommet goes into the firewall to the passenger side of the steering column. Another rubber plug plugs into it and routes down the side of the bellhousing to the shifter where the switch resides being connected to the transmission by a bracket held on by the side cover bolts. A small rod connects the switch to the reverse arm of the shifter. The switch, bracket and rock shield are all available as reproductions.
Was your car originally a manual floor shift car? If not, your car will likely not have the 3/4 inch hole in the firewall and you will have to drill it.
Go to this page of my web site: http://www.geocities.com/motorcity/flats/8627/underhoodpartspage.html
In the second to last photo on the page you will see a pair of wires in a heat sleeve exit the firewall just above the grounding strap. That's the back up light switch/wiring harness. The other half is on the other side of the fire wall and connects to your underdash harness.
The assembly manual illustrates all of this exceptionally well.

Depending on where the car was assembled, determining if it was a factory 4-speed car is pretty easy by reviewing data on the cowl tag. If you can get it and post it we can tell you if it was.

Weren’t backup lights optional? Even if it has a factory 4 speed doesn’t mean it will have the backup harness and hole for the grommet.

It depends on the model. the 300's had optional back up lights. Malibu's and SS had back up lights.
Wow, I got to answer a question for one of the guru's. :)

Remember guys this is an El camino , if that makes a difference on the option.

It doesn't matter that it's an El Camino but back up lights were optional though it was pretty rare for them to NOT have back up lights. The cowl tag may tell us if it had back up lights too (they are part of the comfort and convenience package).

I will take a pic of the cowl tag this weekend and post it in this thread.
