I am doing a frame off restoration on a 70SS396 and I was wondering which is the better inner fenders to use for a show quality/originality standpoint.

Dennis,

I would go with whatever your car came with, if palstic use plastic, if steel use steel. My 70 had steel so I stayed with steel.

Richr,
How can you know what the inner fenders came with originally?
This isn't listed on the build sheet.

My 69 had plastic but I used steel (Goodmark) because they look better, are paintable (you choose gloss), and are less cost. I've heard good quality, accurate repros of the plastic ones aren't available.

True I don't know what his car came with originally, I was assuming he had removed either one during his resto, excuse me for not being clear, in my case my car originally came with steel.

My '71SS was built in Van Nuys. I can say with a certain amount of certainty that it came with plastic inner fenders from the factory.

While detailing this thing underneath the hood this past summer, I came across something that was very perplexing. I found a plastic one on the passenger side, steel on the driver's side!!! Huh???? After getting everything out of the engine compartment, I also noticed where the frame had been heated up on the driver's side. Started to make a little more sense. I deduced that the driver's side had been thumped hard enough to have to replace it with a steel inner fender. The plastic one on the passenger side was all busted up on top. I replaced it with a steel one, sand blasted the one on the driver's side and repainted. They look great!!! The steel is a little more difficult to work with on alignment but I think you will be happier with it.

71LS5,
Finding a plastic one on the passenger side isn't unusual. Remember that is the side with the battery and lots of corrosion over the years. Plastic ones last longer in that instance. However, mine is plastic on the passenger side and has a couple of splits where it hooks to the fender.

Both my wife's '70 Chevelle and mine came with plastic inner fenders when we bought them new in 1970. When I replaced mine in the late '70's because of cracks, the local Chevy parts department supplied steel replacements. Her car was built in Baltimore and mine in Arlington.
