: Painting inner fenders
onick Mar 16th, 04, 2:17 AM I am going to be painting my inner fenders(metal) this week. I plan on sanding them down best i can, cleaning w/ laquer thinner, spray can primer (not sure which i should get), and some Kyrlon semi-flat black spray paint. I'm very inexperienced w/ paint, and i am not sure what primer to use? I have heard of self-etching primer, i have seen enamals.... Do i need more then one primer? I'm getting all confused what to get graemlins/clonk.gif Also, does the process above sound right? Any help would be great. Also, what is the easiest way to get inner fenders out of the car?
onick Mar 16th, 04, 1:02 PM anyone?
Bill Rose Mar 16th, 04, 2:34 PM If you will be painting with spray cans, I would use the primer they recommend on the can. The folks who make Krylon know what should be under their top coats. Scuff the wheel wells with 400 grit paper or a grey scotch bright pad. Then prime and paint like the directions say on the can. Mask or cover everything within 10 feet or so, cause the over spray will get on parts of the car that you don't want it on.
MR454SS Mar 16th, 04, 4:45 PM Personally I like the rattle can products from the Eastwood Company,I also am detailing out my engine compartment,I just sprayed my firewall with there underhood black,I put on there brush on rust encapcilator paint/black on my frame and top coated with there chassis black spray paint, looks great,no brush marks,no runs and they have the correct shade of gloss, myself I don't have much luck with krylon,as it seams like it has a tendicy to run if you aren't careful,I will be doing my new inner fenders next and I will be using the underhood black, good luck with your project. There phone # is 1-800-345-1178,web site is www.eastwood.com (http://www.eastwood.com)

onick Mar 16th, 04, 5:10 PM ok, now that i know how to paint them, how do you get the inner fenders out? i'm pretty sure the wheels have to come off. How are they connected to the car.
onick Mar 18th, 04, 3:24 PM anyone know how to get them off? i don't want to just start unbolting things and mess something up.
Professor_SS Mar 18th, 04, 4:58 PM if 68 is like 70. their are two bolts at the top into the fender, one large one into the cowl 3/4 down the rear curve and two or three at the front edge connecting it to the rad support. Also, the battery tray is bolted into them on one side.
crakarjax Mar 21st, 04, 2:41 AM I think they come out w/o taking the fenders off? prolly the best way I can think of would be unbolt them (hell, I unbolted mine w/o knowing what I was doing... dont be afraid to explore your car!) jack the car up, off with the tires, and pull them out. Might be some bolts toward the front of the car too, by the rad. support that need romoving. POR-15 would be great on the undersides of them, because it will chip less when hit with rocks and stuff. I am POR-15-ing my firewall/cowl right now. The stuff is hard to work with if you brush it on, and it runs if you do it too thick, and you need a thin wide brush, and it stains your skin, and you need to overcoat it, and it is expensive, but still, it works like no other. Good luck!
onick Mar 21st, 04, 3:59 AM thanks for all the replies! Got them out and painted this weekend. Had to do some touch up after i put them back in(really hard to do w/ out scratching) The only trouble i had was getting the battery tray bolts out. That seems to be the only part of my car that has a rust problem. All said and done, got my radiator support painted, iner fenders, hood latch, and even made the horn look better :D Thanks again for all the replies- Eric
