Hey guys the time to choose a color combo is approaching smile.gif and i believe i will be using a dark charcol metallic grey (chrysler) and i want to add 70 style stripes (black), what i'm wondering is should i use metallic like the grey or should i go with a non-metallic for the black stripes? Also what black tone should i use to redo the grill parts? The car is a 67 coupe, cowl hood, no vinyl roof but it has the vinyl trim. Thanks for all the help in advance guys/gals. Ralph

Personally I think the 70-72 stripes on a 66-67 look stupid.

If you want a two tone why not do it from the body line. Take that top body line and carry it throu. Something like a 67 chevelle(red and silver) Year one hauls around with them, but instead of going throu the middle of the car go on that top body line. Thats my opinion...Eric

A metallic black is hard to pull off in my book. Something about dont look like. Ive painted a few OEM grand prixs with a metallic black and it seemed to just bring the car down a notch.

I think the best stripes are two contrast colors or a ghost stripe.

I agree, metalic black in my opinion just looks dirty. The charcoal and straight black would look better I'm sure.

I am also doing a metallic gray with stripes, but I will also have some flames with the stripes. It should look pretty bitchin'. I've got a sketch I did a while back, I would post it, but I don't know how.

My 66 has a red interior. Instead of black (as it is now), I keep thinking of maybe going with a charcoal metallic. I think that should look good with red interior.

I do agree that the 70 style stripes don't fit that body style, but I can't say that I've ever seen it, to tell you the truth. Maybe with a cowl hood it would look okay?

I have had this car since h.s. i had those type of stripes then and i liked it i.m.o. Charcol grey looks cool on these cars seens to make em look a little smaller i was mostly wondering about the type of black to use and which black to use to redo the grill. Keep the thoughts coming guys. P.S. stupid is a little harsh???...

I'll have to ditto on the stripes on anything but 70-72's. A Charcoal grey just dosn't do a thing for me. Bright silver or black. Nothing in between looks good.
If I were forced by an Iraqui prison gaurd to pick a charcoal color, it would be Corvette steel cities grey.
The stock colors for each year are the best choice if your car is 75% or more, stock looking.
Custom colors can look good, but only if they are executed in a top $ show car with lots of big money parts and $20,000 paint.

It actually pains me to see weird colors over wavy bodywork on any classic car. It's the biggest waste of time and materials, especially if the owner isn't happy with the car after it's done and tries to sell it. Just a bigger mess for the next person who tries to build a nice car.

So if you're bound and determined to paint it charcoal with band-aid stripes, PLEASE do a great job.
When asking for an opinion around here, prepare yourself like we're your older brother. We love ya, but we're going to let you have it! ;)

I won't get into the "stripes" thing, obviously very heartfelt and personal on both sides. Just remember..first, it is your car...and second, you may want it to be someone else's car someday(but why would anyone want to sell their pride & joy?).

As far as grill color...if you're talking the black...I've had great results with plain ol' Krylon Satin Black. Tape carefully. Use several light coats. Good luck. Have fun! :D

My '68 Convertible has red interior and I plan to re-do it using red leather. I will also replace the top with black Sunfast cloth. I noticed that there are several new model cars (Mercedes, BMW, honda)that come with red interior now. I think they look great!

Anyway, I just painted my '68 using the '04 Mercedes "Brilliant Silver Metalic" paint. In my opinion, it is an incredible silver. It seems darker or lighter depending on how you look at it or what's next to it.

Thanks guys wouldn't want it any other way (i've got thick skin) yes it will be straight, not a single rust spot in any outer panel to be patched and lots....of board sanding! I would love to use the original color but it was originally red and if i see another red Chevelle i'm gonna puke. I feel the need to be different and charcol is definitly that. There is just to many black, silver and red Chevelles and although they all are favorites of mine, i gotta hope a different look will grab some eyes and compliments, plus i hate being a copycat. If anyone has more keep it coming! Ralph

If you insist ;)
Here's how I would paint it if I had to use charcoal. Look at this chip chart.
HOK Chips (http://www.cyclecolor.com/id52.htm)
Paint the car two-toned with Galaxy Grey over Orion Silver Shimrin on the bottom, separated by a red divider stripe/stripes along the top beltline of the body. Of course you'll need the car to be slammed with 20/18 wheels. :D I can picture it my head. Cool car.
