The lock cylinder on the trunk of my 72 came out yesterday. The latch mechanism is fine, I can open the trunk with a long screwdriver. The lock worked fine before, and the long rod that operated the latch is still attached to the cylinder. There was a piece that looked like some sort of retainer that was just rattling around loose just inside the trunk lid behind the cylinder that finally just fell out.

I have no idea how to put this back together again, or what pieces might be broken or missing.

Any tips?

cylinder is held in place with a sheetmetal retainer, which is held in place with a screw. Sounds like the screw backed out and the retainer fell out. If the retainer is still good it can be reinstalled with the cylinder and a new screw.

Sounds easy enought. I guess I need to take the trunk latch out to do this, right? The retainer looks OK to me...

Many parts of this car have a screw loose. Especially the part sitting in the driver's seat...

nope, dont remove the latch. Put the retainer up into the trunk lid most of the way, then install the lock cylinder, push the retainer the rest of the way in so it slides over the tabs on the cylinder, holding it in place. Then put the screw in so the retainer doesnt fall back out.
