: 66 Cowl - some stamping and other number help
JJ67SS Apr 13th, 05, 11:18 AM Yeah - My login is 67SS but it's held up in an estate liquidation court battle for probably a year or so...
So, in the meantime, I picked up this 66 SS to restore....
Cowl info is as follows:
CHEVROLET DIV GENERAL MOTORS CORP
1A DETROIT MICHIGAN 2 4
ST 66-13817 BODY BF 3076
TR 761 PAINT MM
ACC 7514
THIS CAR FINISHED WITH
Magic Mirror ACRYLIC LACQUER
BODY BY FISHER
What I gathered so far:
1A = Jan 1st week
66-13817 = 1966 SS 2dr Sport Coupe
BF = Fremont CA
761 = Black Imitation Leather (bench seat)
MM = Aztec Bronze Poly - (though the car is Marina Blue now)
Questions I have:
The first line has stamped into the tag "2 4" - any significance here?
The second line after the BF is 3076 - any ideas?
The last line has ACC 7514 - what is this for?
Thanks!

The 2 4 in the first line... is it stamped differently from the other numbers?
The 3076 and 7514 are internal plant tracking numbers and don't really mean anything. I am pretty sure there probably was some GM paperwork that would have matched those, but generally not left with the car....
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Apr 13th, 05, 3:05 PM As Tony said.. the "24" is most likley stamped in the upper right corner of the tag, likely not the same looking stamp as the rest of the tag, maybe even crooked, but deeper... there is debate as to what this means... I have been tracking these codes on FREMONT Tags for some time.. and can only GUESS that it is INSPECTOR type of stamp, representng possibly the SHIFT... 2nd shift, 4th hour.... I have seen examples with "12", "13", etc.. then other examples with "21" "22", and so on up to "28".. these are just what I have seen... I have not to my recollection seen any 3rd shift stamps.. ie. "34".
Again, don't take it to the bank.. just observation and guessing.. ;)
Mike
JJ67SS Apr 13th, 05, 3:16 PM The "2 4" designation stampings go into the tag (depressed) versus the other tag digits which come out of the tag (raised).
Thanks!

depressed = stamped
raised = embossed
The 4 digits after BF (Fisher Plant code) is the assigned body number. Each car got a difference number. Usually indicates the seq of body in that style but how they assigned this number varied by plant and model years.
The stamped in numbers in upper corner is not known and likely will never be known unless a person who did this is still around and can shed some light on it. It could have been cars that were repaired for body problems found after assembly but before the left the plant. A guy down the street from me worked at Flint assembly retiring in the 1980's (h eis in his late 80's today) . When I had a 1970 El Camino he was over one day looking it over and I saw him looking at the body tag. He said they ran 1970 El Camino's on his line in 1970 and he wanted to see if this one came from Flint, it did not. He mentioned they often stamped the tags when repairs had to be done with the cars. I did not ask him to elaborate. This could be it?? Don't know, just guessing. It could be these digits id'd a repair?? Paint repair etc.

The theory is sound, but I would have to say, likely not in this case... I say this, b/c just about every Fremont 66 Trim Tag I have seen or have in my collection has a similar two digit stamp like this.. ranginging from 12 to 28...they couldn't all be needing repair could they? :) But as was said, this is all guess work...

DaleM Apr 13th, 05, 9:43 PM It's also interesting to note that sometime between the 01A body date you have and an 01E body date plate I have, the "CHEVROLET DIV GENERAL MOTORS CORP" as well as "THIS CAR FINISHED WITH
Magic Mirror ACRYLIC LACQUER
BODY BY FISHER"
was removed from the Chevelle body plates at Fremont. Also, the BODY and PAINT words were moved to the right side of the respective codes and the ACC reference was removed. Here is (http://www.chevellestuff.com/66velle/tags/tt_bf02.jpg) an example of a Fremont 01E body tag.
1966_L78 Apr 14th, 05, 1:13 PM Thank Dale...
Thats had often puzzled me... Living in Northern California, almost every chevelle I have seen or owned was built at Fremont... I do recall seeing a few that had the "finished in Magic Mirro...", but these were back before I had any Idea about dates, etc (I knew the "138" and usually the paint and interior stuff)...
So this change was in January? Both my current cars are late 66 (April and June) and therefore do not have that statement... Now I know why...

It seems a logical deduction since the thread starter's tag is 01A and the one I linked to is 01E. I do have a November (11A), December (12A) Fremont tag with the same layout as the 01A. The other 5 tags I have for Fremont, 01E, 02A, 04D, 06A, and 07B, are the different style. Now we just need to find Fremont tags dated 01B, 01C, and 01D to see what week the change was made. ;)
CDN SS Apr 14th, 05, 6:47 PM I found it very interesting that this Aztec Bronze car came with a black interior I'm certainly no expert but have a special interest Aztec Bronze 66's and have researched alot of them ,only once before have I ever seen an Aztec Bronze car with Black Interior, Certainly not a combination you see often .....
Rick Tucker Apr 14th, 05, 7:11 PM One of my El Camino's was 01D and it does not have "CHEVROLET DIV GENERAL MOTORS CORP" as well as "THIS CAR FINISHED WITH
Magic Mirror ACRYLIC LACQUER
BODY BY FISHER". I'll try to attach a photo, let's see how I do (rookie ya know):

I have a Fremont 66 SS Dec.(12C) same as 01A format w/26 in upper right hand corner with a small perfect hole to the left of 26.Also has BF2425, ACC 24234.

Looking through my small collection of 66 body tags I found the following interiors on Aztec Bronze:
Bronze - 3
Fawn - 1
Black - 4
I'm with you though, I think the bronze or even fawn looks better than black with the bronze exterior. ;)
JJ67SS Apr 15th, 05, 12:06 PM I uploaded a picture of the cowl tag to my cardomain site... Looks like MM (Aztec Bronze) and 761 (Black Imitation Leather interior) maybe a strange or rare combination???
http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/822091
As I stated at the top of this thread - the car is currently Marina Blue and probably be painted the like - though my son pushing me to either REGAL RED or BLACK... we'll see, lots of work before the base coat goes on.... :)
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Apr 15th, 05, 12:15 PM I'd have to disagree from my own personal experience.. seen many more Aztec with Black guts than Aztec/Aztec cars.

My Aztek bronze car had a two-tone fawn interior...
And my neighbor had an Aztek Bronze with Bronze bench car...
CDN SS Apr 15th, 05, 4:45 PM Just to clarify ...... I did did not mean to imply the black interior did not look good just that mere mortals like myself don't see it very often , now Mystery Mike now he knows all :) so I'm sure lots of black ones built . Yes the two tone fawn with Aztec Bronze is very nice too .........most of the Aztec bronze cars I have seen have the bronze interior ......... I have seen one Black car with bronze interior ???
AZCamino Apr 15th, 05, 10:30 PM Here is a 1B with Magic Mirror.
