More engine builders out there should be recommending the use of hydraulic
roller retro-fits. Get away from the "old days" of flattening new cams from improper fire-ups, adjusting valve lash, etc. And forget about mechanical rollers on street cars, they will literally eat valve springs from the extreme pressure. The power gains are huge due to the cam profiles with the hyd. roller setup. We are seeing 500 HP on basic mid-size SB's with 9.5:1 compression and in the area of 800 with 9.75:1 compression on mid-size BB's.
Both those combinations are with alloy heads, which means they could probably run on 89 octane. I presently test all with 93 octane and a carburetor. (No injection, yet!) These numbers are with out-of-the-box components with the exception of Comp Cams custom ground hyd. rollers. I don't too many 454's anymore, but I do have one (492) with 9.2:1 making over 600 HP. We are about to test a 468 CI SB and see some staggering HP. Also a "pump gas special". Thanks, Gary
P.S. It's great to start up a 500 HP SBC or 800 HP BBC and just let it idle away! You can "crank it all day long" as long as you have oil pressure.

800 Hp from a hydro roller BBC......

  with less than 10-1 compression:rolleyes:  there are more than two of us that would argue that point, unless you're spraying it with a 250-300 shot.

We're just a little shy of 800 right now and it's only because we did absolutely no porting whatsoever on the heads. Out of the box 375 CFM thru the intake and 275 out the exhaust. Stock ratio rocker arms on intake and exhaust and keep in mind the C.R. is really to low with with the alloy heads. We could have gone at least 10.75:1 and still used pump gas (93) with aluminum on top. The 67 Chevelle that won the Comp Cams pump gas shoot recently was a customer of ours back in 1999 and we gave him 760 HP-back then. (Had a solid roller in that one though) I'd have to thank Comp Cams for a bit of help. We're almost ready to bolt a small block up (468 C.I.) and see similar H.P. We're at 500 with a basic short hyd. roller 383. These had Brodix's on 'em with straight spark plugs and cast up back in 1988! Customer wanted to use because they were polished.
