What exactly are you trying to do ? There is no "coating" that I know of that will allow you to retain the original metal colour while treating it so that it won't rust.

If you want to paint the metal while retaining the "correct" colours there are several products out there. Eastwood makes/markets a host of paints which replicate the proper colours while providing anti rust & corrosion protection. They have everything from Iron coloured paint to anodising greens & yellows. I believe that VHT & Duplicolor also produce similar products. Eastwood does make a product/kit that electro-plates a zinc coating onto metal as a protective measure but I think it changes the colour.

POR produces a product called Metal Mask which duplicates an IRON steel finish and it looks pretty good. It is a POR product so once it's dry, it's tough and will seal threads up tight. The disadvantage is that if you need to make adjustments for alignments you will have to clean the threads off otherise you'll find everything "paint locked". It's even tougher than Thread Locker.

Hope it helped.

you can spray "cool mist" or "cool tool" on it. it is a machining tool used to lubricate and cool parts being machined. it is a clear greenish liquid, it has a very good rust adhibiter in it. i have sprayed stuff with it and they have not rusted since.
