: First go @ my primer job/ Any ideas
feedphillipnow Jun 23rd, 04, 12:38 AM I tried priming out 2 panels tonight, the fender and door on the passenger side. Well I succeeded eventualy. I was using a tired little air compressor I got from my grandpas house :D This thing is a Campbell Hausfeld which I think makes a decent MIG welder. It's called a "Power Pal" It goes up to 100Psi but it only has 1/2 horse power. Right when I would press my trigger the ammount I would want out would spray for just that period of pressing it down, then it would spray like crap. This thing is way under rated for this kind of stuff isnt it?
The bad thing is, its scared me quite a bit. I know I could handle the base coat and finish this primer and body work, But the top/clear coat I dont think I can pull off. I may take all my paint I have boought (everything but the clear coat) and take it into a shop and say here, I did all this, I have all the crap. Spray it for me.
And Im not prepared to go out and spend a couple hundred bucks on a compressor for this. I'd be nearing the price of paying more to do it myself graemlins/beers.gif bad news. I may borrow one from someone though. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Or paint stories?
Canuck64ss Jun 23rd, 04, 9:21 AM Hello again....
That little compressor is more meant for air brushing and pumping up tires etc.... Certainly not for spraying paint...
If you can't borrow a compressor & gun from anyone, consider renting a 5hp,60 gal, 120 volt compressor (2 stage VERY highly recomended)for a long weekend. ALWAYS use an inline filter when spraying anything, the disposable ones are fine but depending on the weather conditions you might be changing it a few times during use. Renting a spray gun is like Russian Roullette... who knows who did what to it, if ya know what I mean.
For a spray gun, I would suggest a top loader HVLP with a 1.4 nozzle. There are several "value guns" out there and will work fine for your purposes. Note that a good SATA brand gun can run you up to a $1000.00 whereas a Protek or an A.N.I. can be had for under a $100.00
As for finding a paint shop that will take "your stuff & shoot it".... I would say that you might be hard pressed to find someone to do it... If you know someone or have friends in the business you might be OK but not just anyone will do it. I am excluding the MAACO types .... Those guy's can paint pretty good cause they get lot's of practice but try to get them to use a product they are not familiar with....
Hope it Helps.
Steve
feedphillipnow Jun 23rd, 04, 2:28 PM Thanks Steve. I was going to stop by Macco today and tell them my situation and see if they could do it and if so at what cost. I was thinking that as well, all those cars they do they must get alot of practice, I have a gravity feed gun, and a standard type for the primer, decent guns, and a good filter, I got all that stuff recently but the compressor.... yeah, sucks for this
I'll post I find out @ Macco, or similar places. One way or another I want paint by next payday (Weekend after this one) :D Exciting
Mr.McFast Jun 23rd, 04, 6:50 PM ive heard about macco graemlins/sad.gif i think id pass on that oppurtunity....... the reason being is that ive heard of peeps say they didnt even mask off anything just spray it and then it had ORANGE PEEL shaped like a FLA (fat ladys ASS)....all they do is scuff and paint...they said paint was all over the glass, seats, door panels......im not saying this place wont do u a good job but i defanutly WOULD NOT take it there get it done right the first time....then itll give u no reason to do it again
feedphillipnow Jun 24th, 04, 4:17 PM Damn! Paint all over windows, seats and more. If I had any overspray on the bezels Id be bitching them out. What a bad experience. I talked to them, there guys dont know how to spray PPG, and they wont spray it at all. There loss! I'll do it myself :D
stealth71 Jun 24th, 04, 5:07 PM Yeah I got one of those maaco jobs and I can tell you they suck. Lasted for maybe 2 years. They were supposed to clear coat the whole car but only did the trunk and the hood, so the tops of the fenders faded from red to pink. I do not reccomend them in any way and I would say to definately do it yourself before choosing them. If you used that little compressor you have, it would probably last longer than the maaco job. that's my two cents.
feedphillipnow Jun 24th, 04, 7:34 PM I heard some kid talking the guy about getting his car painted, some newer car, import nothing fancy. The $299 jobs they offer look decent on paper but the kid was smart he was asking real questions! How long it would last, they guy said a 12 month guarantee, then he asked how long the PAINT LASTS, he said probably 2 years if your lucky. That sucks, I was never concidering there cheap lines and never would just there painters which is ruled out. If someone knows it will only last a couple years or probably less, and they still want it? Thats just crazy!
