The lower portion was black on most, I have run across some that were bare but that is not the majority. Your shift tube lever if it is what I am thinking was silver Zinc or cad. The shift tube? is the rod at the end of the column with a grommet, on I believe only column shift cars, but not floor shift models. It's connected by another rod to the levers on the tranny.
