Just wondering what I should pay for a 1967 chevelle SS . My neighbor has it sitting in a shed. It is a true SS (Vin 138) It has original 396 engine, 4 spd,12bolt,all emblems are good shape, hood in good shape, full gauges including blinker tach. Neighbor claims car ran the day he parked it 15 years ago. Body and frame in very very bad shape, very rusty. I would like to know What any of you think i should pay for this car. Thanks!!!

Drew, I take it that your neighbor has given you the task of setting a price. Probably you asked him about it and he said: " I dunno, what do you think it is worth?", and you told him that you would ask around and get back to him.
You have never restored a car have you? Do not take this question the wrong way - follow along with me. To determine "worth" is actually simple: first determine the current market price for a fully restored car, then deduct for everything that needs to be done. Do not forget to place a monetary value on your labor time, because all the sublet labor you hire will not forget about charging you for their labor.
You may quickly come to the determination that all the parts and labor needed will exceed the current market value, and that is alright too. Then you get to decide how much hobby value you will derive from completing this car. Be honest with yourself about your desire and fortitude to see a couple of year project all the way through. Be honest as well about your skills and available garage space and tools.
Or you may decide that you would rather start with a car that will not need the same amount of work. Remember that rust never sleeps, and that what you can see is surely only the beginning. Once you start removing body panels you may be suprised the extent of the rot. When you say the frame is very rusty, is it just on the surface, or is there complete rotten sections? If the frame is rotted out, then a replacement will be needed - which also makes for a full frame off restoration.

Thanks Bomber!! I know exactualy what you mean about time and money needed to restore a car. I should have explained the car a little differently. Basically what this car needs is a doner body and frame. I guess the question I need to ask is what do think the running gear ( needs to all be rebuilt ) and all other SS trim is worth???
Thanks!!!

Drew,
Just don't even think about switching the VIN tags off the SS to a donor car, that is if you buy it. Switching the VIN tags is illegal and we don't want to see you go to jail. Do what you can to save the original body.
Good Luck! :beers:

I wouldn't buy it.
Tell me where it is and I'll do you and him a favor and get it out of his way. May even give him some salvage bucks for the iron value.:D
