: Need advice on 87 Camaro 5 speed
Second_chance_SS Apr 8th, 05, 10:39 PM I am looking at a 87 IROC with a 5 speed that lost 2nd and 4th at the same time. Is there a common link inside that would explain this, or is it toast?? The rest of the trans works good and the car still drives in 1st, 3rd, and 5th, with no unusual noise.

Second_chance_SS Apr 8th, 05, 11:02 PM Thanks for the link. I may go see if I can do a search on the topic, but I really didn't want to register to ask a question about a car I may not buy.

fast67vellen2o Apr 9th, 05, 4:25 PM The Camaro 5speed is a T-5 trans..... they out and out SUCK..... if you are low on fluid, it wont work, if you miss 3rd gear bwtn 1st and 3rd, it wont work. I would suggest getting another one.
I have a T-5 in my 90 Mustang... i am on my 5th trans. The are crap!
jrg77 Apr 10th, 05, 7:26 PM You can rebuild the one you have if the case isn't cracked, or go for the preferred fix and convert to a T56 six speed. It will be more money, but in the long run you will be happier.

So the 5 speeds are junk and a 6 speed is a bolt in conversion ?? I wouldn't have anything against a 6 speed. How much more would this conversion cost than a 5 speed rebuild ?
Thanks
snydes Apr 10th, 05, 8:22 PM I'd be willing to bet you have a problem in the lid with the shift mechanism. Of course this would intail that you have to pull the trans to inspect. There is a pin you have to knock out on the shifter end once you take the shifter out, then you unbolt the tailhousing, and then the lid. The lid will come off with the forks and all attached.
What happened when it first gave you this problem?
Of course a T-56 would be the preffered upgrade. But they are in demand so you will have a hard time getting a great deal on one. You would also need a different bellhousing and if I remember correctly a different slave cylinder. Not sure on the driveshaft, but I think you need a modified crossmember. But I think there is no modifications needed to the floor. All that info is on that 3rd gen site. At any rate, it will cost a whole lot more than fixing your 5-speed.
Second_chance_SS Apr 11th, 05, 10:46 PM Thanks for the replies, guy's. I didn't buy the 87 with the trans problem, but I did buy an 88 with a 5 speed. The change to the T-56 does sound like a bit of work and money. The car I bought is supposed to be in good mechanical condition, but I will keep this info for future use.
jrg77 Apr 15th, 05, 7:04 PM As long as you stay at 300hp or less, and don't put slicks on it you are fine. Start tryin to show where you spent the money, and you'll be buying a trans...
Good luck with your new car!
cobra2411 Apr 15th, 05, 7:29 PM I have a 93 Cobra with 150k miles and the original T5. They will live quite a long time if you don't abuse them. I'm going to have Hanlon Motorsports (www.hanlonmotorsports.com) rebuild it when it needs it. They can also convert it to much stronger gear set that'll handle up to 600hp. It's not for daily drivers though because the gears are softer and will wear out sooner.

ZZ69chevelle Apr 15th, 05, 9:31 PM 88 Is the first year for the world class T5 which isn't really world class, but better than the earlier T5. If you don't use sticky tires or power shift the thing like a madman, and drive somewhat normal, it'll last a long time. Mine has 91K on it and still rowing along fine with a warmed over TPI 305.
