: Question on '67 windshield markings & replacement sources
snydes Apr 7th, 05, 9:49 PM I'm at the point now that I can put the windshied back in my '67(finally), and after cleaning up and inspecting the original (I think), I believe I'm going to replace it. These are the markings on the windshield, can someone tell me if this is marked like an original?
Shat-R-Proof
Shaded
Safety
Float
R AO LSG ASI
Dot-52 M19
On the top inside edge in white letters, it also has the following;
670-24-3
From what I read, I believe Pilkington would be the best choice for a replacement unit. I hear you can have them date code them and all. Any one here have that done or have any other reccomendations?
Thanks,
Steve
snydes Apr 8th, 05, 10:14 PM Hey, where are the glass experts here?
Well, I have done some research since I first posted. If what I read is true, than Safety-Float is a dead give-a-way of a replacement, right?
Also, the rest of my glass is all clear PPG pieces. So does this mean that the car would have had a clear windshield, or could you get a tinted windshield with clear side and back glass?
Finally, does anyone make clear windshields, or are they all tinted?
DaleM Apr 9th, 05, 12:36 PM I thought you were going to replace it anyway so I didn't reply right away. Yes, you could get a tinted windshield only as RPO A02 and could get all tinted glass with RPO A01. I don't know of any mfg that would have a non-tinted windshield but then again, I don't know all of them or know if such a piece is made. I would assume there would be a mfg of a non-tinted windshield since even that was an option in 1967.
I only have date code info on LOF glass and Shat-R-Proof didn't ring a bell so I hesitated to jump in and say whether it's original or replacement. Apparently a day's worth of research on your own got you your answer.
snydes Apr 9th, 05, 4:48 PM I'll let you go with a warning this time Dale. Don't make me do my own research again ;)
Now I gotta wing it and guess if I had a tinted unit or not originally. Unfortunately I was never able to recover any build sheet in the car. As un-altered as the car was when I found it, the rodents that destroyed the inside of the car surely found that piece of paper to be a great bedding material.
At least it could have been either way, so a tinted windshield wouldn't be incorrect.
DaleM Apr 9th, 05, 5:14 PM Of the 403,963 total Chevelles of all models built in 67, 80,859 RPO A01 (all windows) and 177,059 RPO A02 (tinted windshield only) were ordered. So, you have a better than 50/50 chance yours came with at least the windshield tinted and it would be correct. Unfortunately the numbers aren't broken down into specific models but I'd assume more Malibus and SSs would be more likely optioned with it than 300s and 300 Deluxes.
AZCamino Apr 11th, 05, 1:34 PM Unless your 67 was assembled in Fremont or Baltimore, your trim tag will indicate if the car came with a tinted windshield, or all tinted glass. The bottom line of the trim tag has some codes like E 2LG. If you have an E in group 1, all the glass is tinted. If you have a W, then your car originally had only a tinted windshield. Neither a E or a W in group 1 would be no tinted glass at all.
snydes Apr 11th, 05, 3:14 PM Well, then I strike out again. Mines a Baltimore built car. I appreciate the info though.
