: stock oil pan on hi-po motor?

Am I going to be putting my 10.5:1 357 at risk by using the stock oil pan off the 307 that's in the car now? I'm assuming it'll bolt up to the 350 without a problem?
I'm running out of money on this build, and I'm trying to keep a stock look (even painted my aluminum intake orange) and keep the budget down. I have ordered a Moroso racing oil pump, with standard pressure and volume. I'm hoping that won't be too deep for the stock pan or this discussion may be moot. I didn't feel comfortable using a $20 oem oil pump on my $3000 engine. :) If the stock oil pan will work fine then I'd like to just re-use it, but by the same token as my previous statement I don't want to put the motor at risk after I've spent the better part of a year buying parts and working on it. The car will see mostly street duty, with an occasional trip to the dragstrip or autocross. For racing I'd probably just add an extra 1/2 quart to the motor to prevent the pump from getting 'out of the water' during hard accel, braking, turning.

comments?

thanks,
Brian

I run a stock replacement pan and stock pump with my 454
Over 10K miles and NO problems
No need to overthink this stuff :)

What sort of gears and tires will you be running, (Cruise RPM)?
Will you be able to get ALL of the debris out of the 307 pan?

You can get a nice claimer style pan with a built in crank scraper and screen type windage tray for around $100.

really? what brand/where to get?

I'm running 3.42 gears, 275/40/17 tires. It turns 3000rpms at 65mph, 3500 is 78mph, so on the highway I'm usually cruising around 3200. Usually around 2500 just driving around town. When racing though I plan on shifting around 6200.

Yeah, I know cleaning the old pan will be a beyatch, but I'm going to repaint it anyhow. It would get a thorough scrubbing.

Brian,

For what you are planning to do with your car, I would suggest that you get yourself a 'claimer' oil pan. It is a stock size pan with a windage tray and two baffles and trap doors to hold the oil near the pickup. I found one here: http://expressauto.zoovy.com/product/S7108Z for $79.95 + the pickup.

Here is a better view of the inside of one. http://www.moroso.com/catalog/categorydisplay.asp?catcode=11928

So I would agree for under $100 it would be a good step up. I've seen your tires, brakes, and chassis. You have a good chance to create some serious G's.

Thanks RJ, that one doesn't look too bad. The stuff I had been looking at was like $300+, and I was worried about crossmember, starter, header clearance, etc.

BTW, the new engine is getting very close! Ordered oil, water, and fuel pumps today, and I have the heads assembled and all the cam and valvetrain stuff ready to go in except for pushrods. :)

Chevy did the oiling system right on the small block motors. But the upgraded pan for turns is probably good insurance on your investment. If it is only a 5 quart pan,you may want to shy away from a high volume pump.

Very Cool. I have used the Canton #11-200 claimer pan several times. Actually I am assembling a circle track motor this weekend with one on it. I don't think you really need to pay for a name brand like Moroso, Canton, or Milidon. Just search the circle track suppliers and look for a claimer pan and pickup.

If you need an more help give a shout.

Look for Midwest Motorsports. They have a pan/pump/pickup combo on their website for $80. It has a one-sided kickout that goes under the starter. If that's too cheap, Summit sells a pan that looks just like a Moroso one with the triangular side kickouts for something like $80.
