I am installing the SS gauger cluster with factory in my 68.
Was told that the HEI distributor I have will not work with the factory tach without a filter installed.

Do I need a filter? and if so where can I get one?

What HEI are you using?

If you are referring to a HEI having issues with the factory tach, it depends on the HEI that you are putting in. It's the module that provides the correct output to the tach and some of the modules will cause erratic readings.

I would suggest the Accel, Echlin or AC Delco modules. I know for sure that the Accel or Echlin modules work with your tach.

Well if it's a factory GM (Delco) HEI your tach should work fine without a factory tach filter. The tach filter, found on most 70s and all 80s Camaros also found on 80s Monte Carlos, is primarily used to filter out radio noise. This (http://i12.ebayimg.com/01/i/03/87/10/83_1_b.JPG) is a pic of one. If you want one let me know I have a few.
