I saw this mentioned in another thread that I didnt want to high jack. We are using the new quiet steel in the Saturn Vue, it's also being used in other new cars now. It's 2 thin sheets of steel with a plastic layer sandwiched between them. I work in the Stamping plant and when you handle these pieces they feel like rubber, very flexible, when you bang them together they dont even sound like steel.
How would you repair this stuff? I dont see you being able to weld it with the plastic inside..

How do they put them together at the factory?

They are spot welded, but when repairs are made in the field they are usually mig welded so I dont know if you CAN mig weld this.

Ron, from what I read on the Chrysler site(others might be different) but the plastic coating is very thin 1,000th of an inch, so MIG welding is possible.
The repair method on Chrysler is to use a process called weld bonding. You use adhesive and a resistance spot welder.
Ford is using this new steel in the 2004 F150 dash and also the Explorer dash and seat I believe. They say that Spot welding will the recommended repair.

I dont know but i fixed a Vue last month and it was the chinsiest piece of crap i have ever seen. The door is a metal frame with a hefty bag glued over it and a plastic door skin screwed onto it.
