In my frequent trips to my local Chevy parts man, I discover that part numbers get changed as well as get discontinued.
I needed pedal pads (68-77) for the brake and clutch pedals for Zac's 68. The number in the book is no good any more and has changed to15706041. The pad fits just fine, BUT, the ridges on the pads are a little different from original pads. If you replace both brake and clutch pads, it won't be noticeable. This is for the PLAIN brake pad (manual tranny car), the DISC BRAKE pad is still a good number.
The plastic bushings for the brake and clutch pedal shaft (at the top) have had several changes. The latest number is 15594358. They used to be white, now the bushings are black. Otherwise, they are the same. The IMPORTANT thing is that the bushings are STILL available!
For the 68-72 cars with a manual tranny, the push rod that goes between the Z-bar and throwout bearing fork has just recently been discontinued. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUT, a few dealers around the country still show them in their inventory (many dealer part depts are on line nationally). If you need one NOW, hop on down to your Chevy parts dept and have your friendly (well, whatever) parts man (er, person) get on line and check around the country to see has one and have him order it for you. Parts like this, when they are gone, they're gone! I just got 2 out of ILL. The part number for that rod is 9779202.
Oh ya, the rubber boot that goes in the hole in the bell housing for the throwout bearing is still available, 14007355.
Thirty years ago I NEVER gave a second thought to buying parts for 10-30yr old cars. But now, if a part is still available for a 60s-70s Chevelle, I BUY IT!!! And maybe get a couple of spares.
Anyone here have the Y-shaped spring retainer on the bearing end of the throwout bearing fork break? That retainer is attached with a single rivet-----------------and is now discontinued! I needed one for Zac's 68. My Chevy parts man found 9 in Hinton, Okla. I had him get them all. I have now repaired 2 throwout bearing forks!!!!
These old parts are becoming discontinued every day!
