: Anyone looking for a 283?
rj66chevelle Apr 4th, 05, 2:03 PM I have a 283 (pretty much complete I think) that I got with my 66 velle when I bought it. The motor is completely torn apart. Pistons are junk but everything else is useable. Comes with powerpack heads. Just seeing if anyone is interested in it, I'm going to put a 327 in the car, so I don't have a use for it. Would be open to some kind of a trade. I need a rebuildable 327 and also a 4-speed tranny.
I also have a '74 350 short block with a spun bearing if anyone is looking for a builder.
Let me know if anyone is interested, we can wheel and deal.

Second_chance_SS Apr 5th, 05, 2:30 PM Is it the correct 283 from your 66 ??
rj66chevelle Apr 5th, 05, 5:41 PM I'm not sure if it is or not. It came along with the car but I haven't checked the code yet to see if it is correct for the car.

Unclepennybags Apr 6th, 05, 5:07 AM I'm looking for either a forged crank, or a later 283 block. (I have a 1961 block which requires a forged crank) I wonder how much it would cost to ship a block to MI.

rj66chevelle Apr 6th, 05, 8:40 AM The engine I have is a 65 model from a full size chevy car. Block, crank, rods, pistons (junk), heads, 2 barrel intake w/ carb, everything is pretty much there, just in pieces. If you are interested, I'll do some digging on a shipping price.

rj66chevelle Apr 8th, 05, 12:16 AM Here is the casting number on the crank: 3876768
One of the decoding sites I used says this is a forged crank, but another one I checked says its a cast. Can anyone shed some light on what it is?
Unclepennybags Apr 8th, 05, 5:09 AM A cast crank has a sharp parting line form the mold. A Forged crank has a wide, rounded parting line. Look at some good pictures of cast and forged cranks on Ebay. You'll be able to tell the difference easily.
