396 cranks should literally be a dime a dozen. You should be able to pick up one for $25-50.

Lunati used to sell stock reground cranks. Or stroke and index ground stock style cranks. The grind is flawless right on the money.

when I got my 396 it had spun a rod bearing I took it to the local checker auto parts and they took it as a core and charged me $140 for a 10-10 crank kit, it's a cast crank though, but then again it's not a race motor and if I ever put it together I may even put it in a car someday Jim

I wouldn't worry about the crank being cast if your not going to spray it.
I have a friend who runs a cast crank in his stocker he runs 10's and hasn't had a problem yet. Why is he running a cast crank their lighter.

Comp Products has NEW GM 6223 forged cranks for $150 (blems) and $250 (good) last I checked.

They will need to be balanced but IMO you shoudl balance any engine you plan to run hard or keep.
If you ever watch a crank spin up on a balance machine (even a stock combo) you'll want to balance every engine you do from then on.
Rumor is the blems usually only need a polish, and max a .010 turn.

At $150 for a blem I would buy an extra to keep around... I can always have it machined to my specs and still come out way cheap.

Very true I think you should have every engine rebalanced.
Factory balance really sucks and to tell you the truth chevys are among the worst.
