View Full Version : Power Steering Box Leak

I replaced the stock power steering box in my 67 SS with a mid 70s close ratio box from a Camaro. The stearing was vastly improved but, like al things old, it leaks. Has anyone put new seals in one of these?

Is it something a simple Italian lad like myself can do?

Thanks
Chuck

I really don't want to replace the stearing box. I just put it in last year. Does anyone have any idea how to fix a leak in this box?

The pitman shaft seals are best replaced by someone with experience, as is just about all other work done on steerboxes.

IMO you'd be best served by removing the box and having it serviced by a competent shop that does this type of work on a regular basis (not a general practioner outfit).

Leaking fittings (you didn't specify where the leak(s) is(are) are easy to fix. A mid-70s Camaro box should have the 45-degree flare fittings that are easy to address with new hoses.

I'm curious, how do you find your turning circle to be with the Camaro box?
I'm not putting my brand-new OEM unused IROC box into my '66 Elco due to some very good advice about internal stops from members here on the TC site.

I replaced the shaft seal on mine years ago. Hardest part was getting the nut off. I also used a seal puller to get the seal out. I did it with the box on the car and it has been fine since. I thought it was no big deal, but someone else may have another opinion.

I just replaced my pitman arm seals. I used a screwdriver to pry on the sides of the seals so that I could get them out. Not a good idea, and it might leak. Also, I pounded the first one in too far soit is sort of at an angle. Also bad. The outer washer doesnt touch the snap ring now. I suck. I am just hoping that it doesn't leak, regardless of the messy job.

So basically, it's not hard but get a seal puller for sure, and a good pair of snap ring pliers (i broke the tip on mine cuz that ring was so huge!)

By the way... I don't know which hose goes where from pump to gearbox... can someone take a quick look for me? As of now I have the leftmost on the pump going to leftmost on the box.
