: Please help Engine Alignment problem
htm Mar 30th, 05, 10:10 AM Hi guys, I have been trying to shoe horn my big block into my 67 and I am having a world of problems my body guys want to put the nose on but I would like to get the engine sitting right. Here is my problem ..... Orig SB car installing a BB using orig frame mounts and small block engine mounts motor will fit but the D/S Exhaust manifold hits the engine cross member and the trans mount dosent line up with the crossmember either. SO I lossened the frame mounts and removed the trans mount bolts, the motor relaxed thought I had it... shifted the engine to give exhaust manifold clearance now the trans mount is off about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch and will not get any closer unless forced into place, even then I am still off a little so I rocked both mounts back and forth still cant seem to get it to settle in correct. The exhaust manifolds are correct for the car, I dont beleive the frame is off because I had the Body completely off the frame and it went back on without any aligment issues. So now I have a engine that will not line up and now is sitting un level, The guys want to get the nose and doors on so they can move onto the 1/4 panels I dont want to weld my z bar bracket to the frame until I get the engine set right, I am at the end of my rope so I turn to the best for advise please help ..............
pdq67 Mar 30th, 05, 9:14 PM I don't know about Chevelles, but First Gen. cars have the BB motor offset to the pass. side about an inch on CORRECT BB frame and rubber/Poly mounts for steering gear box clearance.
I had to use a Poly tranny mount that had three holes in it by kicking/prying my tranny over and installing a single bolt in the middle Poly mount hole and through the pass side crossmember hole b/c I used my SB tranny crossmember...
Now everything lines up fine..
Hope this helps??

There is a differance in small block transmission crossmembers ? how about automatic to stick, The last time I swap around engine and cars I went from a 66 small block stick to a 67 6cyl automatic swap the drivetrain over everything went in fine. This BB is kicking my A** I hope it worth the trouble ???????????
OLDED Mar 30th, 05, 10:25 PM Some times the rubber mount has interference with the frame mount and the mounts won't "settle" in. Check the bottom side of the rubber mount for contact points. You may need to grind away a small amount to clear everything - on the first gen. cars.

karphan Mar 30th, 05, 11:45 PM Did the same thing on my 67 malibu. Found that the oil pan was resting on the frame. Used the energy suspension mount kit but wasn't right. Had to order the correct oil pan and had plenty of clearance. I switched out the small block frame brackets for a set of big block ones from Year One as well. Check and make sure the pan is not hitting. Learned a lot by doing this big block swap. Things are much tighter compared to the small block.
htm Mar 31st, 05, 12:55 PM Oil pan is correct for 67 purchased directly from GM, I did double check and the oil pan is not hitting thanks,, What is the differance between small block / big block frame mounts
SoCalRat Mar 31st, 05, 2:14 PM BB mounts are the same as SB for 67's, only difference is the reinforcement ridge. Take off the manifold to give yourself some wiggle room. Are you off center left to right or fore and aft? I don't know which trans you are using but the trans mount for the original PG and 400 are different. Had to move mine back an inch for the PG to Muncie swap. It was a tighter fit with the BB than the SB.
Know your pain, just went thru this myself.
Thats seems to be my problem, I can get everything lined up without the exhaust manifold on, the back ear will hit engine crossmember, so either the ear will ground out on the frame or I have a to really force the back of the trans over to the right (passenger side) either way its not right, I have installed a muncie, the car came with a automatic, I was able to choose a different set of holes on the frame for the crossember as far as depth but side to side is were my problem is.. I have no interferance except the exhaust manifold,,,, oil pan clears nothing causing the misalignment mater of fact I pulled the manifold off and all is good. Keep the suggestions coming I am sure with all your help I will find the anwser.....
THANKS GUYS
SoCalRat Mar 31st, 05, 8:25 PM So can you get your manifolds on after puttint the engine in the car.. some have had to grind off a portion of the ear to fit. I removed my steering shaft when installing my headers. You'll figure it out soon I'm sure
Hi guys I have a little egg on the old face, It appears that the left side manifold is incorrect, I was told the part number I have is a replacement number and it is correct, I am unable to varify that information the part number I have is 3904399 with a date code of A282 if I am correct that should be Jan 28 1972 ? with the manifold off it should line up without a problem, so now I am in search of the correct manifold. I will add what a pain in the a** to get that manifold out missing that small block more and more ..... Thanks for all you help if anyone has infomation on that manifold please let me know
