I am new to using HVLP spray guns. The primer I am using says to have 10 psi at the cap what does translate into for pressure at the gun. I am sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks in advance

I would guess it at 50 PSI at the gun regulator to get 10 at the cap. But it really depends on your gun. Spray a small test patch or just try it out it's primmer, you will be sanding it anyway smile.gif

Joe, there are no stupid questions. I bought a new HVLP gun recently and wondered the same thing. It seems that 45 to 50 psi at the compressor should be about right, but keep an eye on your pressure gauge. Your gun might be like mine and be an air hog and before you know it the paint is not atomizing properly and you can end up with orange peel. It may be High Volume, Low Pressure, but I guess that doesn't mean low air  I shot more primer yesterday and just used my old syphon style gun.

Texas70, I see you are making progress on your project. It's coming along nicely. Can you tell me if your bucket seats were recovered. If so, where did you get the covers? They look like the originals. Many of the reproduction seat covers that I have seen don't look that good.

First off YOU NEED TO KNOW the brand of gun you are using.

Sorry but paint guns are not just paint guns, each has different needs that it requires to run properly.

The gun I have is a Sharpe Colbalt. I was only going to use this gun for primer and then buy a better one for the actual topcoat. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Sharpe Cobolt needs 50 PSI at the gun to produce 10 at the cap. And as with all HVLP guns this 10 lbs at the cap is for LEGAL reasons. If you go a little over 50 lbs it is only going to atomize the paint or primer better. In fact, I have a test cap and found that the Sharpe Platinim needs about 55 lbs to even get the 10 lbs at the cap!

Thanks MARTINSR. Is this a good gun for painting or should it only be used for primer I have heard mixed reviews on the colbalt guns, any advice would be appreciated.

That's what test pannels are for ;) Go to a body shop and get a old hood or something off there scrap pile and paint a small say 6 inch square section with primmer sand it, base coat clear coat etc.. and see what it looks like, I think you will be glad you did, and it only takes a few ounces of paint! YOu can also get test cards for free at most paint supliers. I have about ten that I primed and wet sanded so they are ready for using to match paint graemlins/thumbsup.gif
