: I'd like my dash and interior body color, but painter says it's not possible
Rockford66 Oct 28th, 03, 12:17 AM I'm having my 67 painted and wanted the metal interior parts painted body color (Porsche Guards Red). I went to check progress and the painter showed me where he had tried to paint the interior pieces and they had fish eyes. He seemed like it would either not be possible to finish it in red due to the armoral and other products placed on the original paint, or that it would cost a good chunk of cash to prep it. Somethin tells me that he might not like the interior body color, because he said that other people who had looked at it questioned the decision of having it done that way. Thanks a ton for any help!
MARTINSR Oct 28th, 03, 12:53 AM Well let me ask you this, if he has started painting it and there are fish eyes, what in the heck are going to do with it now??
It HAS to be painted now, I would assume. SOOOOOOOOOO, why in the heck does it matter what he paints it? As far as the fish eyes are concerned that is.
If you want it painted the same as the outside paint it the same as the outside.
I think it looks cool that way personally.
Rockford66 Oct 28th, 03, 1:01 AM Mr. Marinsr you're the man, I've learned an enormous amount of knowledge from reading your posts. I'm only 17 and haven't been around paint or body work that much, but I thought the same thing if there are going to be fish eye's in red, wouldn't there be fisheyes in black? When my dad came home and told me the body man said it would cost quite a bit extra to do the interior body color over standard black, it ticked me off REALLY bad. Thanks for all your help, I don't think anyone could thank you enough for all the help you've given to us! If you don't mind another question, when I go to talk to my painter what exactly should I say, because I really do want my interior body color, but I don't want to pay a good chunk of extra dough to get it that way, and I also don't want to go in sounding like a smart elic teenager. Just any advice on what I can do would be great. Thank you
MARTINSR Oct 28th, 03, 1:13 AM You know, quite honestly, they deserve more money if it is going to take longer than normal to prep it. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal. But sometimes that darn Armorall really gets into the pores of the paint it is hard as heck to get out. Plus, if they have sanded it, well, they sanded the Armorall into the paint!
I can't say that I blame them, it has happened to me. You just forget what a mess that darn stuff can be.
If they have sanded it and applied paint over the Armorall, all the cleaning in the world isn't going to clean it now. So, a good sanding and some sort of "Barrier" coat over it will be needed.
What brand of paint is he using?
Let's hope some one else can chime in on your problem. I don't have many ideas, maybe tomorrow but right now my old head needs to hit the sack. graemlins/boring.gif
MARTINSR Oct 28th, 03, 1:16 AM Oh, and thank you very much for the kind words. Ahhhhhhh 17, I remember it well. Here I am at 16 in 1974.
You are already way a head of the curve, you care enough to read on the subject. Good for you!

Rumblin70SS Oct 28th, 03, 8:25 AM Now those are some cool photos...............it's neat to see stuff like that!!
MARTINSR Oct 28th, 03, 10:29 AM You think that is cool, my brother just recently found some 8mm film of me sanding on the truck, and even doing a burn out!!! That blew me away!! If I can get it on some sort of video card or something I will post it.
I could "hear" that stovebolt six as the film showed the motor sitting there running (I didn't run a hood smile.gif ) http://www.crownvic.us/forum/images/smilies/new/3gears.gif

Bo6869ChevelleMan Oct 28th, 03, 11:33 AM Hey Rockford 66 , When I painted my dash in my Chevelle, I FIRST CLEANED it with a mild liquid detergent (JOY or AJAX DISH liquid) , SECONDLY I then wiped it down a couple of times with PPG'S WAX & GREASE REMOVER, THIRD- I masked it off and used a tack rag on the area to pick up any lint or anything being careful not to touch the area with your skin or anything but the tack rag, because your fingers and skin has oil in them and could cause problems. FOURTH- I sprayed 2 good coats of PPG primer-sealer on entire area with my touch-up gun. After It dryed, I LIGHTY scuffed up the area with a scotch brite pad and then wiped the entire area down again a couple of times with wax & grease remover, then I sprayed a couple of coats of PPG black paint on the entire area. It turned out really nice. You could do the prep work yourself and cut down the cost. Hope this helps. Mark
Rockford66 Oct 28th, 03, 12:26 PM Thanks for the help guys. I haven't talked to the painter directly, but something makes me think he sanded a portion of the interior before he cleaned/degreased it. I hope he didn't do the whole interior this way, if not I'll do chevelleman said and see if he'll let me do some prep work myself. Those are some pretty sweet pictures Martin, if you find anymore post them!
Rockford66 Oct 28th, 03, 12:40 PM Oh yes, by the way he is using Sikkens, but I'm unsure of what line of Sikkens paint he is using.
YenkoChevelle69 Oct 28th, 03, 3:42 PM Ahhhhhh how I dig those pants :D
Professor_SS Oct 28th, 03, 5:04 PM Damn MartinSr. you and I could have passed for twins back in the day. In 74 my main ride was a navy chopper and I had short hair, but in 1970 I not only had the exact same hair cut as you did in 74 but the same pants. You couldn't kill those pants, but they would melt if you got enough sparks flying.
Did you wear a baby blue tux complete with bell bottoms and the ruffled shirt to the Sr Prom? Or did you have the black and white checkered sport coat, with the red/white/blue poly pants? :D
MARTINSR Oct 28th, 03, 9:25 PM Rick, blue tux smile.gif I wish I knew where the photo of me in my polyester suit (also blue) at the senior trip at Disney land was. If you could keep your lunch down, would be entertained. smile.gif
