: Raising a body with rusty body mounts

I'm nowhere near this step in the resto process yet, but I'm curious how this would be done. My car is really rusty but I plan on restoring it anyway, just to see how far I can go with it. Since I'd be doing a frame-off, how would you raise a body with rusty body mounts, with some that even caved in? Would this get repaired before the body is separated from the frame? There's no chance of securing anything to them the way the mounts are, I know that all the bolts would snap off since I already tried one. They're strong enough to hold up the body, so setting the body down on some cynderblocks probably wouldn't be a problem, but lifting it could be. Any ideas?

Shawn, it's a catch 22.. rusted body mounts and supports will have too be replaced with the car off the frame, but you would be nervous about lifting it since the rust is that bad. I would suggest that you lift it from the rockers if they are solid.. and if not replace the rockers then lift from there!! Good Luck. I'm sure you'll get a few more ideas from the guys here http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

No prob, Shai. I never thought anyone actually visited my site lol!

The rockers seem to be the most solid part on the car, they're the only parts that aren't rusted through. I guess thats where I'd have to slide something under to lift it. Thanks!

I have lifted them by attaching a chain to the hood hinge mount bolt hole in the front and the tailgate hinge bolt holes in the rear and lifting each end with a cherry picker. Obviously you'd have to be a little more creative in the rear on a sedan. Be careful to support the door openings if it's a convertible.

I lifted mine from the fender bolt hole at the base of the windshield. I tried lifting from the hood hinge bold and pulled it off. The tailgate cable bolts worked for the back.

good luck
