Or is that a "primed" car? Whatever... I'm referring to the number of older cars I see on the road that have had primer put on but no final color. After months of that, what would be the first thing to do before shooting the first basecoat? Sand lightly? Media blast? Etchant wash? Steel wool? More primer?

<insert other wild guesses>

Well, mine's primer black right now. Has been since before I got it. (Goin' on 3 years now) If you saw it the day I brought it home, then saw it again today, you'd probably say, "Hey, ya put new wheels and tires on it!" Needless to say, all the work has been stuff you really can't see. I haven't started on the body yet, but do I drive it every chance I get? You betcha! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif So if you see my primered car goin down the street, please understand that it will have a color on it eventually! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif

I've heard that the memory is the second thing to go.
I don't remember what the first thing is!?

Mine will I think be driving around primed because after it is leagally on the road I will be broke more than I am now. I don't give a rats @$$ what other people think of my car. I'd rather get to drive it than not. Around here everyone is critical of everything, my 66 is soo far from perfect that I don't care if people see it in a primer stage or not. We can't all afford to get a paint job right away http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif
Know that wasn't the question but just givin my 2 cents...

All you do is clean it well, scuff it then paint I think. That is what they are going to do with my 87 Chev once it get's the full body done. Just got the front end parts, new fenders, inner fender, door. The guy said once you bring it to get it all painted all we do is clean it, scuff it then shoot it.

Be careful. Some primers will absorb water. They will then hold the water and cause the paint not to stick and surface rust to appear. Some types of primer will let the car rust terribly. One you let the primer get wet you will really need to strip the car again before you paint it.

I have to look it up to find what primer is waterproof, but I think it is a epoxy of some sort. Chris - The parts you buy aftermarket have this type of paint.

Peter, So what you are saying is the EPD coated repro hoods will rust after a while? Is that spaycan primer anygood or would it behove me to take it to a painter and have them shoot it?

My car was black and I just completed taking it down and have it primed now...it will be like this for several more months until I get all the body work done...I believe it will have to be taken back down to the metal...or at least scuff it real good with some real mean sandpaper...watch for the surface rust spots, these need to be taken all the way down to the metal...can't wait to get that canary yellow on my car...haha

as long as you use a two part primer,
"that's a primer with a hardener" you shouldn't have a problem.
But if you are using Laquer primer, or primer from a spray can your'e gonna have problems.
Always use the same brand primer as the paint.

No Richard, the coating on most repro parts now is very durable and will not rust if left bare. That stuff should not be stripped off when doing more body work either.

The spray can stuff is garbage. You will get surface rust really quickly. That stuff is no good for any type of topcoat anyways so if you use it it should be stripped before painting. There are newer products on the market that are 2-part and do a much better job than any spray can.

COOL http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif now I can get the inner door kit with the cash I was going to use to prep and paint the hood.
I had some rusty areas on my wagon and used some cold galvanizing on them.

Thanks Peter
