: Could This Be a Bent Valve??

Had a problem with a bent pushrod some time back and now am worried that the valve is bent too. Compression check and leak down check were normal, so I didnt think that I had a bent valve at the time.

Well, I put everything back together with new pushrods (shorter) and fired it up tonight. I kept hearing a squeaking sound so I shut it off and inspected. I pulled the valve cover off and noticed that everytime the rocker opened the suspect valve, it would sporadically squeak. Now I'm worried that the valve is actually bent and everytime it opens it rubs against the guide causing a squeaking sound.

Any thought or suggestions? I dont know what to do now!!

Lisle makes a handy "on the engine" valve spring compressor. I'd pull the plug ( or all of them to make this easier), drop the piston to bdc, put some cut ignition wire ( or rope) in the cylinder and than crank it up to TDC to seat the valves against their seats. Pop the spring. Then CAREFULLY ease the piston back off TDC to give the valve some room to move ( BUT NOT MUCH!) and check it by hand to feel if its binding.

IF it is, well, might as well start draining the antifreeze.

I know of no way to check for a bent valve IF it seats properly and doesnt show any compression loss. Hopefully someone else has a quicker solution.

Did you look at the rocker arm real good ?? I have heard them make noise if the pivot ball is burnt up. Also, a wiped cam can do the same thing.
