I'm interested in a 70 chevelle ss 396....Haven't looked at it personally yet. Dealer assures me it is a REAL SS...
HOWEVER....pictures have amber lens front turn signal lights....
The dash is the SS dash...with tach..(rallye), 12 bolt rear, front disks, SAYS it has f-41...Should I waste my time driving three hours to see it? or might it be real?.. I thought all SS had clear amber (turn) marker lights in 70?

What else can I look for to determine real or clone?

Yes all SS CAME with clear lenses but they could have been replaced or came on a bumper that was replaced. Look here for info on id'ing a 70SS.

Check out the link provided, lot's of good info. There was also a post running in Bench Racing a while ago about the rear bushing in the front lower control arms. Looked pretty convincing, all documented SS's had a round bushing, all documented non-SS's had oval bushing. Again this is something that could have been changed in the last 35 yrs.

Bottom line is without documentation it's a Chevelle, not an SS. Not saying it's not a nice car or worth the price. If you like it and the price is right, ok. Just saying there is no way to prove it, unless it was built in Canada, so don't pay a premium for something that can't be proved.

what do you mean by "built in canada"... The vin code said it was built in Kansas city.

If the car was built in canada, it can be documented by GM. Only canadian built Chevelles have this option. However there are a lot of ways to to tell if a Chevelle is in all likelyhood an SS. People with their holy grail build sheets like to wave them around to make people think their cars are more valuable. Ebay is full of blank build sheets right now. Unless you are the original owner, or have spoken to and trust him, anything is possible.
