: 70 rear valance mounting ?

I am putting a 70 back together that someone else took apart, and I'm unsure how the valance mounts under the bumper. There is the valance, bumper, and lisence plate holder but what order goes on top of each other. The holes in my new bumper are bigger than the factory bumper and it looks like the screws for the plate holder may have went through all 3 and threaded into the bumper, but I'm not sure. Also how does the valance mount to the quarters on the ends? Thanks guys, Jim

Okay, let me give this a shot because it's easier to show you than explain. The valance mounts to the bumper with nuts and bolts, with the license plate holder/filler door on top. Bolts go through, in this order, license plate holder, valance, bumper. The holes on the end of the valance receive speed nuts. The mounting bolts go through the quarter panel holes and screw into those speed nuts. I've used the self tapping type bolts and speed nuts through the years. You have to lay under the rear of the car to get these in. On the license plate mounting, use lock washers on the bolts/nuts.

There are no nuts on the bolts that hold the center together. Originally these were corse threaded bolts the screwed into the hole of the bumper, no nuts on the back.

Mine had nuts and bolts since new. The holes in the bumper NEVER were threaded, ever.

The bolts on my 71 were threaded into the bumper without nuts on the back.

It is a very corse threaded bolt that thread through that hole. Look in assemlby manual and body manual , you will plainly see that there is no nut on the back of the bumper.

well at least the order was correct! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif i guess on mine the threads got stripped out somewhere down the road.

Well, I HATE to disagree with you, BUT, I STILL have my original rear bumper hanging in my garage and there NEVER were course threaded bolts used in that bumper to mate the valance, bumper and license plate frame. My wife also owned a 70 Chevelle which also used bolts and nuts to hold the valence AND license plate frame to the rear bumper. I can't vouch for 71's or 72's, but both of these cars were bought NEW by us in 1970. Hers was built in Baltimore and mine in Arlington. Hers was bought from a dealer's showroom, mine was ordered by me. As an aside, the assembly manual can contain MANY inaccuracies. The manual was written long before the actual "run" was begun and, in practice, many times, the production steps varied from the ones shown in the manual.

Thanks guys, it's always harder when someone else took it apart. I think mine had just the screws going through and threading into the bumper, but my new bumpers holes are bigger so nuts and bolts it will be. Thanks again, Jim
