: Strange Burb Windshield Wiper Question

This is not a velle question so forgive me up front. Have any of you suburban or full size GM truck guys encountered this problem. My wipers just stop working. This happens at the strangest times like running down the 4 lane in a driving rail storm this morning. It is accompanied by a humming or buzzsing sound in the dash or column that goes and comes if I turn the wipers off and on. Sometimes they just start back up by themselves, sometimes I have to smack the dash and this morning I had to get out, open the hood, and give the wiper motor a good smack. I would think that if it was the switch the turn signals and or cruise would be affected and that smacking the motor under the hood would not fix it. On the other hand smacking the dash shouldn't do much for the switch either or the motor out on the firewall. If it is electrical what would be buzzing? So I am wondering if it could be the linkage up in the cowl getting hung up? I have never had the cowl and or wiper linkage apart on this beast. Any helpful hints or ideas would be appreciated since having your wipers stop just as a semi goes by you at 70 MPH is not good!!!

BTW.... 94 surburban 120k miles. I bought it new, but it was involved in a serious accident and had the cowl and all sheet metal forward of that replaced in 1994. I have not had any electrical issues with it other than the fact that since the accident the dome lights have never worked when you open the doors, you can turn them on via the light switch but we have lived with that for 10 years.

thanks in advance.

That happened to me on a Blazer that I had. They told me that it was a relay that starts to go bad. It is an intermittant problem. More than likely if you replace the relay it will go away. Talk to a GM mechanic and see what they say.

Yep, you need to replace the delay pc board thingy
Can't remember what it's actually called right now.

There was a post about the same thing a while back, I think in the electrical & wiring forum.

here is the other post in Electrical & Wiring forum (http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53120&highlight=delay)

{edit}
oops, by the time I found it and came back John had already beat me to it.

GM trucks have a problem with this. The PC board, but sometimes the whole motor gets replaced.

I got a notice sent to me that said that they are issueing a recall for this but only if you havent gone over on a certain # of mileage. I threw it away since I didnt apply anymore.

Ok, I confess, I never even thought about doing a search for suburban wiper problems. What are the odds. Just goes to show, no matter what kind of question you have you guys have already discussed it.

Thanks for the great info, I'll look into it as soon as I can. I have two 14 hour days to go before satr. Hopefully it don't rain.

thanks

napa sells the motor and board together, that way both are new. i believe it is about the same price as just the board from a dealer.

Prof, there was a recall awhile back on the circuit boards, my 96 Tahoe was one that was recalled. At my work, we replaced the board on all of our 94 Chevy trucks. Lots of info over at www.fullsizechevy.com A Napa one will be rebuilt, at least the motor.

Had the same problem with my 91 P/U.
The recall didn't apply, cause my truck was too old!
(I guess GM figures that if you drive an older truck, it's ok if you get killed or wrecked due to their faulty boards)
Bought a replacement board from the dealer...don't remember the exact price, but it seems it was under $40.00. About a 10 minute swap. No problems since.

I tried to solder mine, (and I'm good at it) but the problem continued.
I ended up replacing it.
A friend has a 92 with the same problem. He works at a body shop, and they had a wrecked like 98 or so. He changed out his board for that one, and it had the same problem! lol...

I replaced mywiper printed circuit board, then a year or later I received the recall notice.
