Hello All
I got the steering column out of my 68 4 speed almost out.The problem I have is the clutch rod that goes from the pedal pivot also goes through a round hole in the plate that mounts the column to the firewall.Does the rod have to come off so the column can be removed? Thanks for your help.

The firewall plate his 2 piece. It has a screw at the top and bottom on the circumference of hole for the column to pass thru. Take these out and the screws holding the firewall plate to the firewall and it should slide straight up thru the firewall and free from the car.

Thanks 68'
So are you talking about the two screws that tighten what looks like a band or sort of a hose clamp around the column?I assume that because I don't see any other screws.I couldn't try it this morning but will tonight.

Those are exactly what he means, you may also have to take the bolts out of the plate that secure it to the firewall. It is pretty simple, you'll laugh when it comes out.

Okay that was a big help now the column is free.Unfortunetly I still can't get it out.I seperated the rag joint and now the end that stays on the steering shaft gets hung up on the headers.Ran out of time for tonight but it looks like I will have to loosen the pinch bolt that holds the shaft to the column up near the firewall to seperate the two?
thanks for all the help
Tony
At least on my 71 tilt column you have to remove the bolt at the bottom of the splined shaft. The splined area is recessed for the bolt, so even if it gets loose it won't let the column separate.
