: Help! Ground problem? Neutral switch problem? New engine won't fire!

Well, here's the deal. I dropped a new 454 in and we tried to do our first fire-up tonight.

First off, part I: I have some sort of ground problem, I believe. When I pull the lights out the headlights get dim and then my two signal lights on the dash light up. I believe this could be caused by a ground missing in my printed circuit. I burnt one of the circuits on it so had to do a fancy jumperwork to make it work before, and when I took it out and replaced it I forgot to put one on the fuel gauge. I believe that is part of the problem because there is a post on the fuel gauge missing a cable, and there is a cable hanging down. That post has a nut missing on it and so just be reasoning (and that my fuel gauge is wayyy past full with power on or off) it needs to go there to complete that ground. So, does that sound right?

Now, part II: I am not making a connection from the key to the starter. We can jumper a wire from the battery to the small post on my mini starter and get it to crank, but turning the key there's nothing. We're getting 12 volts inside the car when the key is turned (and only then, i.e. when the starter switch is active), but somehow it is not getting getting the power to the starter. Where could this be getting lost at? This should be the purple wire, right? We dropped the engine and tranny in together, could we have perhaps broken it somehow (is it common to do so?)?

Is part I and II related in some way? I doubt they are but thought I would check.

I converted from an auto to a manual. I am using the same column for my auto, for now (just took the shifter out of the column). Did I miss something there that is not letting power get through?? I left it in the 'park' position, even though I took the shifter handle out.

Anyway, I really, really appreciate all the help...thanks!

What happens if you were to unplug the connector on the NSS. The connector with the two purple wires in it. Flatten out a solid copper wire and shove it both terminals on the connector. This eliminates the NSS. Don't let the jumper touch ground. Use tape over it.
Does the starter turn now?

John, thanks for the reply. I will try in the morning.
