I was wondering if anyone can recommend a good rust treatment (sealer) for already rusted body parts? I seen them on shade tree mechanic and such, but never got the manufacture.

I think you hit the affected area with a wire wheel and apply an acid type substance, than coat it with this black sealer and than you can bondo and paint over it. Does this sound correct, and where can I get some?

Living near the ocean is nice but it's tough on vehicles.... http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks guys

I think you are talking about POR-15. Eastwood sells the stuff. Works great!

If you are looking for a lasting repair, you are going to have to get the rust completely gone either by grinding, blasting, etc. Any other process will only fail in time.

I did a search on POR-15 and it seems guys are using this only on the frame. Can you use it on body parts to be painted over also.

The place where i'm having the most problem is in the trunk where the seal sits,it's in the seal channel so grinding it completly out is a problem. The por-15 might work there as you don't see so much, but what about using it on, say a door or a fender? Their web site says it's REALLY tough to sand,an they keep mentioning the frame.

I've used Loctite Extend for years and never had any re-occurence of rust. I've used it bare and I've primered over it and I've also just painted over it on some small parts. I've used it where it was CONSTANTLY exposed to water and unless it got a scratch through the coating it was unaffected by the water. I know everyone raves about POR-15. I've never used the POR-15 but I have a tremendous amount of confidence in the Extend.

POR-15 and Eastwood's products are great for frames, trunks, undersides of body panels, but not for use on outer body surfaces.
As was said above, the only way to fix rust on an outer panel correctly is to remove it completely by mechanical methods. Then you use self-etching primer or an etching solution followed by a good urethane primer/surfacer. Do a search on
RUST
PREPARATION
PRIMER

There's a lot of good reading, information and advice.

Rass-O'-Nil, Get it from Len Stuart over at www.autobodystore.com. (http://www.autobodystore.com.) The stuff is a great rust converter. It's been tested for 1540 hours of salt spray with automotive paint.

If this is on a body panel, the only right way to fix it is to cut out the rusted area and weld in new steel, and then coat the backside of the panel with Por 15 as a preventative measure against future rust. Never use Por 15 on an exterior sheetmetal body panel. Automotive topcoats wil not adhere to it. Rust usually begins on the backside anyway, so this is where you want the most protection.

I don't know how much clearer I can make this. When you have rust on outer body panels you need to "GET IT GONE". This means Grinding, blasting, panel replacement, partial panel replacement, etc. I don'r care what products you use to "cover" rust, IT WILL COME BACK. Get rid of it, etch prime it and urethane prime it.

i agree if your talking about outer body panels you cant use the brush one stuff it needs to be removed after removal though por-15 on the inside of the panel if accessable is awesome or on any parts painted black and use the por-15 chasis black over it it is awesome you could almost key this stuff and it wont come off once its cured
it will seal in rust to but i woulded put it over a outer panel and paint over it even though the company says you could. go to www.por15.com (http://www.por15.com) get the tech number and call them for advice the are very informative. they helped me alot i did a frame off 70 with the stuff and its very good.

Thanks guys,
I'm gonna cut off the lower rear part of the fender and tack in a new panel. On the trunk channel I might try the por-15, cause you can't see it anyway.
Thanks again, and Gordie lighten up Geez, it's crystal clear, http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Sorry if I got a little carried away ACLineman. I just don't like to see people make mistakes they are sorry for later, especially when I can help them with my own experiences.
