: metal 2 metal by evercoat; is this a good product?
bhawk Nov 11th, 02, 6:34 PM I just butt welded my first patch panel on my chevelle. I did a big piece in the trunk. Thanks to all who posted tips on butt welding, as without your encouragement and advise I would not have tried. Now my question: I want to cover the welding seams in the trunk with a filler to smooth it out. My local supplier has Evercoat Metal 2 Metal. It says on the can it is a waterproof filler that sands easy. I have read past posts and many speak about "All Metal" as a good waterproof base filler. Has anyone tried Metal 2 Metal, and would it be good for me in my trund on my seams? Or should I just go straight to Evercoat Rage, which I hear is a decent ordinary filler?
MARTINSR Nov 11th, 02, 8:34 PM Metal to Metal is a great product. It is harder than heck to sand and you most likely will need a skim coat of a "regular" filler to finish it off.
On the "waterproof" issue. I used to call it "waterproof" also, it does say that one the can. But it is NOT waterproof any more than a "regular" filler. After being corrected on this (here on this site I think) I called the tech department at Evercoat and found it is in deed "waterproof" IF you prime and paint over it. Well DUH, Cardboard is waterproof if you prime and paint over it. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
Anyway it does have talc in it just like "regular" filler so it will absorb moisture.

bhawk Nov 11th, 02, 10:38 PM given that it is not waterproof, is there any advantage to laying it down as a base coat of filler and skim coating with say Rage. Maybe I might as well lay the Rage on now and sand it flat and prime. what do you guys think?
GERS70 Nov 12th, 02, 12:39 AM Go for the all metal. My bodyman told me it is waterproof and it dries hard as a rock.
supposed to have aluminum in it but Im not sure!

MARTINSR Nov 12th, 02, 12:55 AM Gerry, it fills very well, but as I said in my post, it is NOT waterproof. That is not my opinion, it was personally told to me by a tech at Evercoat. It does have talc in it, just as much as Rage, and Talc soaks up moisture.

turbo Nov 12th, 02, 7:32 PM I love the metal to metal , have had good luck with it and find it easy to use .
more ambition than brains Nov 12th, 02, 7:49 PM Also all positive on Metal to Metal. Have used recently. Agree with MARTINSR ON H20 characteristics. Karl
sevt_chevelle Nov 12th, 02, 8:01 PM I would go with the rage, I dont see any advantage with the all metal. All metal sands very hard and can be harmful to breathe plus its hard to feather edge out. Not saying it a bad product its a great one but dont see any advantage over rage...Eric

70isfine Nov 12th, 02, 8:35 PM I use Duraglass by USC.I think that 'Metal Filler' is a bunch of crap.Like its better than using bondo because it has metal fibers in it?Its all plastic filler.Duraglass is easy to work with if you cut it before it sets up to hard.Just rough it out and then finish with regular filler. It is like concrete when it hardens.
turbo Nov 14th, 02, 6:03 PM I really find metal to metal a very nice product, in fact I don't even use spot puttys anymore, I skim with metal to metal
I think you would have to try it to appreciate it as is the case with most products
On all my weld seams I covered them with fiberglass resin jelly (waterproof for sure) to seal any possible openings where moisture could get to the filler from the backside. I cut the resin then coated it with filler to finish the surface and coated the backside with POR-15.
