i need to install the glass and hardware in my door shells and also assemble some things, i want to tape off some areas to protect them from scratching /chipping etc... what tape should i buy that can be used on week old paint? i was thinking about the blue 3m tape that the house painter use.

That will work.Just stick it to your pants first to remove some of the stickiness.

Depends also on the type of paint used. A quality base/clear can have tape on it the next day if it was applied properly and baked.

Ditto, and stack up the layers to give you more protection.
