Does anyone have any idea how much a hood weighs for my 70? Looking to upgrade to fiberglass but want to see how much weight I'm actually saving in comparison to price. This is another topic in performance but this was a specific question thanks guys…

Out of curiosity one day my friend tried to take off the hood of his 1970 and cart it inside to weigh. He said the thing was heavy, cumbersome, and that he'd guess probably at LEAST 50 pounds. There's a reason people go to fiberglass for their hoods, they are heeeeavy. I wouldn't doubt you'd get a 150lb drop just from a door and hood swap. Depending on the hood, there's probably 50 in the hood alone waiting to be thrown out the window.

I have had one on and off twice in the last week. It have to agree, it is VERY cumbersome. My guess would be closer to 75 pounds.

Even if you save 80#(being very generous here) what difference in ET in 1/4 will it make on a pigboat of a car? IMO if you are going to lighten things you gota do it all to get much benifit,20# here 30 there after awhile(and lots of creature comforts and headachs later) you can take off a noticable amount of weight. For the $$$ to buy a hood and the $$$ to get it preped and painted you could spend it else were on the car with greater benifit in performance IMO. Thats just from a performance gain standpoint(or lack of) Now if your doing it because you think a cowl hood looks cool and you think its worth the $$$ then go for it. Just dont forget the cost of making it look purdy when you decide. My .000002$ http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Well my hood is all messed up in the front, they did a very lovely job of recreating the front of the passenger side of the hood with bondo. I was just curious because i had heard that they wasn't that much of a weight advantage.

Ratlover. I wasn't looking as much to kill over all weight but to take weight of the front end to help the transfer. I have alot of creature comforts out already (primarily slow drag car) considering that i will only driver the car in nice weather and 2-3 days of the week. As far as the weight thing is concerned I'm not going crazy all the supports are in and the onlt fiberglass would be the hood. And in a boat of a car thats slow already every pound counts. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

I'm actually in the same boat as you. The fact that my hood is mangled and I need to paint my car any way I might just buy glass because is easier to get ahold of than a original steel hood and new steel is expensive. Unless I can find someone with a mint hood that they are taking off cuz they wana go with a cowl or something. I will probably go glass but not really to save a few #'s

did I mention that I would really like to make a functional cowl like on a 70-72 http://www.chevelles.com/forum/cool.gif That would be a lot of work and $$$ though http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

On my Laguna, I'd go to fiberglass if I wanted cowl induction, just for the new hood and small weight reduction. The only time I'd start fiberglassing would be the entire car, little by little, after i had spent all I wanted on the engine. Once that was done, I'd start fiberglassing the thing. Of course if I had a car dedicated to track duty, I'd probably see if a fiberglass shop would do the panels for a small sum and the chance to plaster their logo across the hood or whatnot. However, i doubt that will happen anytime soon, so the fiberglass waits.
