: 66 ss Goodmark hood Quality??
I've heard that aftermarket 66 Chevelle SS hoods have a slight crown to them thats not exactly like factory.
I always thought that Goodmark stuff was stamped from original GM tooling. Is this so?
I want a ss hood but I'm scared I may not like the fit with the small crown. Do I have to wait to find an original hood or are these Goodmark hoods of good qaulity?
66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Oct 3rd, 03, 9:30 AM I have not personally used one, but can't say I have heard great things about them :( I am sure they will work or meet the need, and somebody here will chime in that has had good success with one, but as always, Original is better if you can find a good one?

67shovel Oct 3rd, 03, 1:53 PM If there anything like the fit of 67 SS aftermarket hood
that I bought, I'd run from it. Mine fits so bad I'm embarassed to close it.
Is your 67 hood a Goodmark brand?
Thanks for your input!
SS396 Convert Oct 4th, 03, 9:55 PM I have an aftermarket SS Hood on my convert.....don't know what make (it was on the car when I bought it)......."BUT"......it's acceptable as long as it's open........The shape does not follow the profile of the fenders and it flexes when being driven......it's obvious that the metal thickness is not to GM standards....It's one of those things that you live with knowing that it has to be taken care of down the road somewhere if you want to have a car of Mike Crown standards( nice car Mike).. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
I've been watching original SS hoods that have gone thru the Ebay system and finally bought one for $91(deal of the century) I had to laugh when the truck delivered it as it was in near perfect condition and the person I bought it from shipped it in the Taiwan packaging of his repro hood........It's like they say ....."one man's garbage is another man's treasure" graemlins/beers.gif
Find a real one and "sleep well Grasshopper"

66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Oct 4th, 03, 10:03 PM :D Thanks Ken,,,but ya know I was thinking...those repro hoods would probably work well on car like mine....I mean, MY HOOD IS OPEN MORE THAN IT'S CLOSED ;) Being I show it so much.
But No, that doesn't mean I am gunna trade the gentlemen tongue.gif
Ken,
what do you type in on e-bay to find an original SS hood. All I see are the repos.
Also how can you tell its a orignal hood, say if you see one at a swap meet?
Thanks, ;)
Dan
SS396 Convert Oct 4th, 03, 10:43 PM Mike.....I'll trade you even up then.....O.K.......I'll buy the Beers......

67shovel Oct 6th, 03, 8:29 AM 66, I don't know what brand mine is. I bought it 5 years ago from a reputable Chevelle supplier.
1hot67 Oct 7th, 03, 4:58 PM I had to work extensively to get my Goodmark hood to fit correctly on my 67. Like mentioned above, it does not follow the fender line at all, and had to be persueded with force.
thanks 67,
What ever happened to quality?
were you able to get the hood to come in? Did it require putty?
Thanks, graemlins/waving.gif

ETD66SS Oct 9th, 03, 11:18 AM I have the same problem with my hood. My original hood did not match the fenders either, the hood had more of a crown to it, bu tthe repo hood has a more noticeable crown.
My bodyman worked his majic, and we got it to match the fenders better than the original hood.
We also made sure the front lip hood molding matched the eyebrow molding perfectly, something even the factory cars don't do...
ETD66SS,
anyway you can find out exactly what your bodyman did to work his magic on your hood to get it to match the fenders? Does he have a phone # or e-mail?
Thanks for the help! smile.gif
ETD66SS Oct 10th, 03, 9:15 AM Well, he started out by filling in the "scoop" in the front fenders above the eybrow moldings to match the shallower "scoope" in the repo hood. Starting at the front, the eybrow molding was aligned with the front lip hood molding.
To get the worst part of the crown out, you have to let the back corners of the hood dip below the level of the wiper grille. Filler was used on the fenders and hood to split the difference in the crown height differential between the fenders and hood. The crown is not completely gone, but it's much better than just tossing on the repo hood and living with the 1/4" height difference between the hood and fenders in the middle.
When all is said and done, the crown on my car will be no more than 1/16" tall in the middle, and the rear corners of the hood may be 1/16" below the wiper grille height.
Not pertfect, but better. If you want it perfect, you would have to do some cutting and re-welding of the hood metal, and that is a huge task IMO.
steve carter Oct 12th, 03, 2:03 AM good mark does not make all the parts they sell they do how ever put a gm sticker on the parts. they quit carring 66/67 ss hoods because of the fit. however 10/20/03 there suposed to be back in stock after being reworked to fit correct.GM test fits ever 5th part they make to assure quialty and allow the GM sticker on the part . anything you want to know about goodmark parts call John at john's classic cars& parts 1-800-335-4571 hes a great guy and if he can't get the part you need it probley can't be found. he stands 100% behind anything he sells new or used. graemlins/waving.gif
67 Mark IV Oct 12th, 03, 7:20 PM I bought a Goodmark 67 SS hood and the fit was very poor , if my original didn't have over 100 dents through out I would have repaired it and sent the repro back. The hood sides and rear lines had to be ground and welded to fit the fender and wiper grille lines. The hood scoop's fit too tight and had to be reworked , I hope the newest version of Goodmark hoods fit perfect , did anybody try DII hoods? As for door skins the large hole for the outside handles and lock cylinder hole had to be opened up quite a bit to fit , the rear tail panel cylinder hole is stamped too high ,where as the key rubs against the molding. Just because the boxes have a GM sticker on them doesn't mean it fit's like original.Any part can be repaired to fit properly , it's a shame you spend top dollar and are disappointed with the product. I think they shouldn't advertise " stamped with original tooling" or mislead others in the future , just my two cents.......Mark
I talked to someone at the 800 number in Gerogia. They said they havent heard anything bad about the 66 hoods and maybe it was beacause people are trying to fit the aftermarket hoods to the flater aftermarket fenders and not the original fenders. Does that sound rigth?
ETD66SS Oct 13th, 03, 8:28 PM No, the hoods are stamped wrong, all there is to it. But as I said, even the factory hoods had more of a crown than the fenders, but not as bad as the repo.
I was upset that my Goodmark hood came in a box that said made it Tiawan.
There was a lot of BS involved to make my hood look good, plus the metal is a thiner gage which just gives it a cheapo feel.
In the future I will stay away from repo sheet metal wherever possible.
I learned a lot on my restoration project, the biggest lesson learned was that 90% of repo parts are crap.
Very missleading! I thought the big taut was "Goodmark GM nothing but the best"
Not so I guess...... graemlins/sad.gif graemlins/sad.gif graemlins/sad.gif

My original left brow moulding doesn't fit well on my aftermarket left front fender, which is compounded by the ill fit of the hood. One problem just perpetuates itself onto other parts when you mix and match, and it becomes very frustrating. Lesson learned.
Rain Man Oct 14th, 03, 6:14 PM Most Chevelle repro stuff is pretty bad by my experiences. Regardless of the repro part in question they never seem to appear exactly as the original. I've had much, much better luck with Corvette repops. My last Chevelle episode dealt with a 4-speed linkage setup for my 66 SS. I ordered it from OPG & it was pitiful. They graciously sent me another setup & told me to keep
the first one! Just the same the 2nd unit wasn't much better. I checked with Year 1 and they use the same, and only, fabricator in Japan or Korea.
They must be loaded when they repro them!
flywheel Oct 16th, 03, 8:43 AM The NEW 66 cowl hoods are available now graemlins/hurray.gif got my order in for one now..Should be in about a week or so....We'll see how they turn out ;)

Hey Please let us know how the cowl hood fits when you get it.I may go that route instead of a SS hood if it fits better.
Thanks,
Dan
Elree Colby Oct 16th, 03, 11:33 PM I bought two 67 Goodmark hoods both were damaged in shipping. Got all but $50 back on each so I have $100 in hoods I can't use. It looks like the original will be repaired. A third 70 hood is on my El Camino. If you look closely at the headlights you will see no gap on the inside and extra wide gap on the outside. This is because the hood was wider by about 1/2" I had to move the fenders out to get it to close. Also the chrome trim on the back edge doesn't fit because of the extra width.
I also have a repro, not Goodmark, bed molding kit. The side rails and top of tailgate didn't fit. The factory side rails have a curve to them front to back the repro didn't have. The old dinged up pieces are back on. The top of tailgate went in the trash and a NOS was located that fit like it was made for it. The 4 corners had grind marks in them I sent them back and was told this is all they have. I told them to send them back I'll put them on e-bay and explain that they are junk from &*% bid at your own risk. When they arrived the pieces were very nice.
The beltline trim, tale gate trim amd rear window trim are repro. They fit good and look great.
