i have the stock bumpers from my 68 chevelle that need to be re-chromed. i called the local rechroming shop today and they told me $300 a piece for each bumper. the bumpers on year one are $226, but they are reproduction. i'm not looking for a show quality finish, but i want the bumpers to look good. what would be the best choice. the car is going to be driven daily.

The one thing to consider is the repro or aftermarket ones might not fit right or line up to the original brackets like the ones you took off of your car. Personally, I would send yours out to be rechromed if it is not a daily driver. If it is a daily driver, you might want to get the repros so you have no down time of your car other then when you are installing them. Again, if it were going on my car that was a fun car that was not a daily driver, I would send mine out to get rechromed. But again, thats my 2 cents

Funny...I just went thru this yesterday.
The local plating shop wants $275 to do my '70 front bumper.
However, I can buy new one right up the road at either Year One or Goodmark for $199.
Originality really means nothing on this particular plain jane Malibu so I'm going with a new bumper.
Besides, if the new bumper is lighter, who cares...a little weight savings on the nose will be a good thing! ;)
The rear bumper was replaced last year with a re-pop...fits great.

I thought you were giving me a "purist" lecture. graemlins/clonk.gif ;)

In this case, this project is far from being an original, numbers matching specie.

Check eBay. There is a guy selling them for $160 each. I bought front and rears for my '68. They are still in the box though...

Chevelle350,
Not sure how soon you are wanting to get your bumpers taken care of, but I saw a massive display at a show in Carlisle, PA from the "Bumper Boyz" On their webpage http://www.bumperboyz.com/ they have a link to the upcoming shows they will be attending. If you find them in your area, you might want to check them out. From what I remember, they had pretty decent prices.
Good luck.
