I am restoring a 70 El Camino SS. Is the grill all black or not.

I believe it is black for a SS and gray for a Malibu.

The center bar and two end pieces are body color, the rest is black.

That's right, the center part is body color, while the rest would be satin black. On Malibus/Non-Super Sports, the grille isn't black, it's argent silver with the body color on the center bar.

In fact, all the original 70 SS grilles I've seen are molded with black plastic and were not painted. As I understand, people are painting the Malibu grilles (which are originally gray/silver in color) black to be SS grilles.

Here's a pic of my grill - it's original, the center is painted the color of the car, the grills black

Hope the link works.

Super70 is correct.

If you have an original grill, it is molded to be the correct color!

Originall SS cars have molded black grills while NON-ss cars (Malibus, 300's etc) have the molded Argent colored grills.

About all that is available today thru aftermarket is molded grey grills. I've heard they don't even have the correct looking Argent color to them so many opt to paint them. If you have an SS you need to order one of these "grey" ones and then paint it the correct black.

Bottom line is, you have to go to do more work than the factory originally had to!

There are available repro SS grilles. I inadvernently got one for my Malibu. After "deerslayer" Ground Up (http://www.ss396.com) sent me the black SS grille. Didn't know about it until after the shop was done. Too late then, but hey it looks great anyway. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
And yes, after the accident I was able to inspect the pieces of grille. They were molded gray plastic, not painted. Don't forget the chrome pieces that also go on the grille.
